The United States’ military engagement in Iran remains a subject of intense speculation and shifting pronouncements, with President Donald Trump offering an enigmatic timeline for its conclusion. When pressed on the duration of the conflict, which he had previously characterised as a “brief excursion,” Trump stated that the war would end “when I feel it in my bones.” He further elaborated, suggesting, “When it’s over –– and I don’t think it’s going to be long –– when it’s over, this is going to bounce back so fast.”
This somewhat ambiguous response comes amidst reports of escalating American military actions in Iran and signals of further potential intensification. Earlier in the week, Trump declared that there was “nothing left” to bomb within Iran. However, the following morning brought news of “one of the most powerful bombing raids in the history of the Middle East.” According to the President, every military target on Kharg Island, which he referred to as “Iran’s crown jewel,” had been successfully destroyed.
Adding to the complexity of the situation, reports indicate a significant deployment of ground troops by the US military to the Middle East. The Wall Street Journal has detailed the Pentagon’s approval for the relocation of an additional 5,000 Marines and sailors to the region. This request reportedly originated from US Central Command and received endorsement from Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth.
The troops in question belong to the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, which is currently assigned to the USS Tripoli, an amphibious assault ship typically based in Japan. While neither the Pentagon nor the White House has officially confirmed whether this vessel’s transfer to the area is a precursor to a ground invasion of Iran, the presence of such a ship is crucial for mounting a substantial amphibious assault. The 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit itself specialises in these types of operations. It is worth noting that approximately 50,000 US troops are already stationed in the region, though President Trump has remained non-committal on the prospect of ordering a full-scale ground invasion.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the war’s endgame, the Trump administration has consistently highlighted its perceived successes. Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth stated, “With each passing hour—we know, and we know that they know—that the military capabilities of their Evil Regime are crumbling.” He further asserted, “They can barely communicate, let alone coordinate. They are confused; we know it. Our response: we will keep pressing. Keep pushing. Keep advancing. No quarter. And no mercy for our enemies.”
In a somber development, US Central Command confirmed the loss of all crew members aboard a refuelling aircraft that crashed. The KC-135 aircraft went down in western Iraq. A statement released by the command indicated that “The circumstances of the incident are under investigation,” but crucially added, “the loss of the aircraft was not due to hostile fire or friendly fire.” This incident tragically brings the total US death toll in the conflict to 13.
Meanwhile, strikes continued overnight, with Iran reportedly targeting oil infrastructure in the Gulf region. Iran’s actions appear to have extended to Bahrain, Oman, Dubai, and Turkey. Concurrently, within Iran, a significant explosion was reported during a large public gathering organised to mark Quds Day, an event dedicated to expressing solidarity with Palestine.
Despite the ongoing military developments and heightened tensions, President Trump’s recent social media activity has largely focused on other matters. While he has made minimal mention of the Iran conflict in the past few hours, he has posted twice about renovations being undertaken at his rebranded Trump-Kennedy Centre. Additionally, on his Truth Social platform, he directed an attack at New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, referring to her as “Maggot Hagerman.”
