The Wests Tigers have kicked off their NRL season with a bang, securing their most emphatic victory in club history with a dominant 44-16 thrashing of the North Queensland Cowboys. This colossal win, achieved in front of a sell-out crowd at Leichhardt Oval, has immediately set tongues wagging about the Tigers’ potential to finally break their long-standing finals drought.
While the 14-year wait for a finals appearance is a significant burden, the Tigers’ performance in round two suggests a genuine shift in fortunes. Star playmaker Jarome Luai was instrumental in the demolition, orchestrating the attack with three try assists, while debutant Kai Pearce-Paul bagged a brace of tries. The home side raced out to an astonishing 28-2 lead by halftime, and the Cowboys were never able to mount a serious challenge.
This resounding win surpasses the Tigers’ previous record for the largest margin of victory to start a season, which was a 16-point win against South Sydney back in 2017. It also marks their most one-sided season opener in the 27 years since their inception as a joint venture.
For coach Benji Marshall, the performance couldn’t have been a better response following a round-one bye. Expectations are understandably high for his third season at the helm, and this opening salvo has certainly amplified them. However, Luai was quick to temper any premature celebrations, emphasising the need for continued humility.
“It’s exciting, but at the same time I think it’s just about being humble,” Luai stated after the match. “It’s only round two. We’ve got a lot of work to do.”
Despite the overwhelming success, there was one concern for the Tigers. Centre Taylan May suffered a suspected right shoulder injury in the first half and was subsequently replaced by Jeral Skelton. Coach Marshall confirmed that May would undergo scans to assess the severity of the injury.
“He seemed OK, but the medical staff said it’s not worth the risk to put him back on, so he’ll get scanned,” Marshall explained.
The North Queensland Cowboys, meanwhile, find themselves under considerable scrutiny following a disappointing opening to their 2026 campaign. Their performance in Las Vegas in their first match of the year was underwhelming, and this heavy defeat at Leichhardt Oval will only intensify the pressure on coach Todd Payten.
Payten acknowledged the rapid turnaround in momentum, admitting his side was physically outmatched.
“I thought we started physically, but then it just snowballed very, very quickly,” Payten conceded.
The Cowboys’ struggles were evident from the outset. They conceded five set restarts in the opening 10 minutes and then leaked two tries while forward Kai O’Donnell was in the sin bin for repeated infringements. Payten expressed confusion regarding O’Donnell’s sin-binning.
“We’re going to seek some clarification,” Payten stated. “Kai was sent to the bin, but he actually didn’t affect a tackle, so I was a bit confused. Another ruck infringement would have sufficed (rather than an off-side penalty).”
The Tigers’ dominance was a multi-faceted effort, with several key players shining. The sin-binning of O’Donnell certainly proved costly for the Cowboys, and the Tigers capitalised ruthlessly.
Early Strike Power: Shortly after O’Donnell was sent to the sin bin, Api Koroisau offered him a cheeky wave as he departed. Moments later, Jarome Luai’s clever inside pass set up Samuela Fainu for the opening try on the left edge.
Pearce-Paul’s Debut Brilliance: Second-rower Kai Pearce-Paul, a new recruit from Newcastle, showcased his try-scoring prowess. He crossed for his first try after receiving a beautifully weighted short ball from Jahream Bula. His second came from a perfectly executed grubber kick by Luai, which he pounced on.
Laulilii’s Finishing Flourish: Luke Laulilii, who is reportedly bound for Perth, put the icing on a superb first half for the Tigers. He crossed from a scrum play just a minute before the halftime siren, extending their already commanding lead.
The Tigers didn’t rest on their laurels in the second half. Luai, who was outstanding in the first half, added his name to the try-scorers list. He regathered his own grubber kick after it ricocheted off the upright and dotted it down.
Any lingering hopes the Cowboys had of staging a comeback were definitively extinguished by Luke Laulilii. He intercepted a pass from Scott Drinkwater and sprinted an impressive 70 metres to seal his second try of the match, firmly cementing the Tigers’ record-breaking victory. The comprehensive performance has sent a clear message to the rest of the competition that the Wests Tigers are a force to be reckoned with in 2026.
