Sobey’s Sensation Secures Phoenix Series Standoff
Nathan Sobey delivered a career-defining performance, a masterclass in offensive firepower, to drag the South East Melbourne Phoenix from the brink of a significant deficit and square their NBL semi-final series against the Adelaide 36ers at one game apiece. The Phoenix clawed their way back from an 18-point chasm to secure a thrilling 101-92 victory at John Cain Arena, setting up a nail-biting Game 3.
The Phoenix found themselves in dire straits during the second quarter, staring down an imposing 18-point lead for the 36ers. However, Sobey orchestrated a monumental turnaround, spearheading a devastating 39-20 run in the third term that completely shifted the momentum of Game 2 of this best-of-three semi-final playoff showdown.
Sobey’s individual brilliance was the undeniable catalyst, with the veteran guard pouring in a personal-best 41 points. His long-range shooting was particularly potent, converting 8-of-16 attempts from beyond the arc. Remarkably, no other Phoenix player managed to eclipse 12 points, highlighting the sheer dominance of Sobey’s offensive output.
“I thought we were playing very passive, very timid in the first quarter,” admitted SEM coach Josh King. “The guys did an unbelievable job of adjusting in that second half. It (the halftime message) was, ‘Get your head out of your ass – we’ve got 20 minutes to save our season’.”
For the Adelaide 36ers, Bryce Cotton led the charge with 29 points. However, his impact was significantly curtailed in the crucial final term, where he was held to a mere two points. Big man Nick Rakocevic provided a strong physical presence, shrugging off the vocal disapproval from the crowd to contribute 18 points and a valuable 10 rebounds.
The opening exchanges were firmly in Adelaide’s control. A buzzer-beating triple from Cotton at the end of the first quarter capped off a blistering 14-2 run, propelling the 36ers to a commanding 30-19 lead.

Adelaide continued their relentless offensive assault, showcasing an exceptional shooting display in the first half. They connected on a scorching 73 per cent of their field goal attempts, including an impressive 75 per cent from three-point range, as the margin ballooned to a daunting 18 points.
The second term saw Zylan Cheatham energise the 36ers with two powerful dunks, while Cotton had already accumulated 19 points by halftime. The Phoenix, uncharacteristically rattled on the defensive end, found themselves trailing 57-44 at the break.
However, the tide turned dramatically after halftime, with Sobey emerging from the break with a renewed intensity. He ignited the Phoenix’s revival with a quick succession of three-pointers and bravely drew a charge from Cheatham, demonstrating his commitment on both ends of the floor.
Sobey, the most seasoned player on the court, refused to rest on his laurels. The Phoenix surged into the lead on the back of his seventh successful three-pointer, and he further extended their advantage with his eighth bomb from downtown.

By the time Sobey had achieved this scoring feat, the Phoenix had outscored Adelaide 22-5 for the quarter, with Sobey contributing a staggering 17 of those points. The Phoenix carried their momentum into the final quarter, holding an 83-77 lead at three-quarter time, and continued to dictate terms throughout the closing stages. Their offensive aggression was evident in their superior statistics, finishing with 25 more shot attempts and 11 more offensive rebounds than the 36ers.
The stage is now set for a decisive Game 3, scheduled to take place at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Tuesday.
“We did a lot of really good things to control the pace in the first half,” reflected Sixers coach Mike Wells. “That third quarter was obviously played on their pace and their terms. We had some possessions with turnovers and missed shots, and they got going.” The series is poised for an epic conclusion, with both teams eager to advance to the Grand Final. The Phoenix have demonstrated their resilience and ability to overcome adversity, while the 36ers will be looking to reassert their dominance on home turf. The winner of this hard-fought semi-final will undoubtedly be battle-hardened and ready for the ultimate challenge.
