Corey Rocchiccioli has significantly strengthened his case for a role as Australia’s second-choice spinner, delivering a stellar five-wicket haul in the final round of the Sheffield Shield. His impressive performance against New South Wales has put him firmly in the spotlight as the national selectors eye future tours.
The 28-year-old off-spinner weaved his magic on Saturday, snaring 5-62 to help skittle the Blues for 232 on the first day of play. Western Australia then reached stumps at 1-33, with both teams already out of contention for the Sheffield Shield final.
Despite being overlooked for an Ashes Test debut when incumbent spinner Nathan Lyon suffered an injury, Rocchiccioli has consistently been the standout spinner in the Sheffield Shield this season. His 36 wickets at an average of 26.27 highlight a campaign of consistent performance, particularly timely as Australia prepares for a challenging tour of spin-friendly India in January and February.
Rocchiccioli’s crucial contributions against NSW included the dismissals of the team’s two highest scorers: Matthew Gilkes (51) and Josh Philippe (52). Philippe, in particular, was beaten in flight by a well-flighted delivery and subsequently caught at long-off.
The West Australian spinner’s spell was marked by a variety of dismissals. He produced a brilliant caught-and-bowled effort to remove opener Will Salzman for just 9. Later, a sharp reflex catch at short leg from Cameron Bancroft accounted for Lachlan Shaw, who had made 22, showcasing the team’s collective fielding efforts.
Adding to Western Australia’s strong performance, quick bowler Albert Esterhuysen continued to impress in his second Sheffield Shield match. Following a promising debut of 4-37 against Queensland, Esterhuysen chipped in with 2-44 against NSW.
His spell included a well-judged, low return catch to dismiss Joel Davies caught and bowled for eight. This wicket was part of a significant NSW collapse, where the team lost 7-98, highlighting the pressure applied by the Western Australian attack. Esterhuysen’s first wicket of the innings was opener Sam Konstas for 38. This dismissal is notable as Konstas, a former Test discard, has now recorded 10 consecutive scores below 50 across all formats since the conclusion of the Big Bash League. This run of form suggests a period of struggle for the batsman as he seeks to regain his prolific scoring touch.
Rocchiccioli’s consistent performances throughout the Sheffield Shield season have not gone unnoticed. His ability to take wickets in crucial moments and his economical bowling have made him a valuable asset for Western Australia. With the upcoming tour of India presenting unique challenges for spinners, Rocchiccioli’s current form and proven track record in domestic cricket position him as a strong contender for a supplementary spin role in the Australian squad. His ability to offer control and take wickets against strong opposition in the Sheffield Shield provides selectors with compelling evidence of his readiness for higher honours. The consistent pressure he applies, coupled with his knack for taking key wickets, makes him a compelling option as Australia looks to build depth in its spin bowling stocks for demanding international campaigns.
