Oscars Selfie Snub: 12 Years Later

It’s hard to believe it’s been a decade since that now-infamous Oscars selfie, and for many of the stars who squeezed into that frame, a lot has changed. Back in 2014, host Ellen DeGeneres, in a moment that essentially broke the internet, gathered some of Hollywood’s biggest names for a spontaneous snapshot. The result was a who’s who of the era, featuring icons like Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, and Channing Tatum all beaming for the camera. As the 2026 Academy Awards approach, it’s a perfect time to revisit this accidental time capsule and see how the lives of those involved have unfolded, with some facing significant public scrutiny.

The Iconic 2014 Oscars Selfie: A Star-Studded Moment

The 2014 Academy Awards ceremony paused for a collective breath as Ellen DeGeneres, before the introduction of a technical achievement award, spontaneously rounded up some of the closest stars for a quick photo. In a moment that has since been recreated countless times, Bradley Cooper held up a Samsung phone, capturing a frame that included Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong’o and her brother Peter, Angelina Jolie, DeGeneres herself, Meryl Streep, Channing Tatum, Julia Roberts, and even a sliver of Jared Leto’s head.

The selfie wasn’t just a collection of famous faces; it also captured some of the night’s big winners. Jared Leto and Lupita Nyong’o took home the Best Supporting Actor and Actress awards, respectively, while Brad Pitt was a producer for “12 Years a Slave,” which was crowned Best Picture. DeGeneres, who was presenting that evening, shared the image on Twitter with the caption: “If only Bradley’s arm was longer. Best photo ever. #oscars.” The tweet went viral, garnering nearly 3 million retweets, almost 2 million likes, and around 170,000 replies, solidifying its place in pop culture history.

Looking back at the photograph now, it’s striking to see how much has shifted for many of the individuals captured in that single, fleeting moment.

Ellen DeGeneres: From Daytime Queen to Public Scrutiny

At the time of the selfie, Ellen DeGeneres was a dominant force in television, having hosted “The Ellen Show” for 11 successful seasons and frequently being the chosen personality to lead major award ceremonies. However, her public image took a significant hit in 2020. Accusations from former employees surfaced, detailing a workplace environment rife with racism, fear, and intimidation. These claims led to intense backlash and widespread scrutiny of the show.

Further allegations emerged from anonymous staff members who accused executive producers of rampant sexual assault and harassment. DeGeneres addressed these claims in a public statement, acknowledging that “things happened here that never should have happened” and expressing deep apologies to those affected. She stated, “I know that I’m in a position of privilege and power and I realized that with that comes responsibility, and I take responsibility for what happens at my show.”

She added that significant changes had been made to the workplace and that the show was embarking on a “new chapter.” In 2021, DeGeneres announced the end of her program, though she maintained that the decision was not a direct consequence of the allegations. She described the period as “very hurtful” and admitted to being amused by some of the early, seemingly absurd, accusations. However, she also confessed that the constant stream of negative press, without her usual platform, made it difficult to address the issues.

Kevin Spacey: Allegations and Legal Battles

Just three years after the iconic selfie, Kevin Spacey faced serious accusations of sexual assault, beginning in 2017. Actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of assaulting him at a party in 1986 when Rapp was just 14 years old, describing the incident as an “unwanted sexual advance.” Following these allegations, Spacey was reportedly removed or recast from numerous film and television projects, including the final season of the Netflix drama “House of Cards.”

Rapp filed a lawsuit in September 2020, seeking approximately $40 million in damages. Spacey vehemently denied all accusations. He stood trial in New York in 2022, where he was found not liable.

Subsequently, Spacey faced trial at Southwark Crown Court in London, facing charges of sexual assault and indecent assault against four men in the UK, all of which he denied. After a highly publicised trial in 2023, Spacey was found not guilty on all counts and was visibly emotional in court. He addressed reporters afterwards, expressing gratitude to the jury for their careful examination of the evidence and thanking the courthouse staff and his legal team.

In 2025, actor Guy Pearce recalled his experience working with Spacey on the 1997 thriller “L.A. Confidential,” speaking about what he described as alleged advances during filming. Pearce had previously alluded to an “uncomfortable” experience during the height of the MeToo movement. He described Spacey as a “handsy guy,” clarifying that while he wasn’t sexually assaulted, he was made to feel uncomfortable.

Appearing on the “Awards Chatter” podcast, Pearce reflected on being “young and susceptible” at the time. He described Spacey as an “aggressive man” who could be “extremely charming and brilliant” but also “held a room remarkably.” Pearce admitted that Spacey “targeted me, no question.” While reluctant to label himself a victim to the same extent as others, Pearce acknowledged that the news of Rapp’s allegations against Spacey was a “wake-up call,” causing him to re-evaluate his own experiences.

Shortly after Pearce’s comments, Spacey responded via a video on Twitter. Addressing Pearce directly, he stated, “If I did something then that upset you, you could have reached out to me. We could have had that conversation. But instead, you’ve decided to speak to the press…” Spacey questioned Pearce’s motives and suggested that Pearce had visited him in Georgia after “L.A. Confidential” to “spend time with me,” implying that Pearce’s current narrative didn’t align with that past behaviour. He concluded by saying, “Grow up.”

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie: A Messy Divorce and Ongoing Disputes

Another significant public event involving stars from the selfie was the shock split of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in 2016, marking the tumultuous end of “Brangelina.” The world was taken by surprise when Pitt ended his marriage to Jennifer Aniston and began a relationship with Jolie, following their collaboration on the 2004 film “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” They dated for 12 years, married in 2014 (months after the Oscars selfie), and shared six children: Maddox, Pax, Shiloh, Vivienne, Knox, and Zahara.

Their separation two years later led to a protracted and often bitter divorce. While they were declared legally single in 2019, disputes over their Chateau Miraval business and child custody continued for years.

In a lawsuit filed in 2022, Jolie alleged that Pitt had drunkenly attacked her and their children during a private jet flight. Court documents claimed that Pitt grabbed her by the head, injured her back and elbow, choked one child, and struck another. The FBI investigated the incident but later closed the case, with Pitt denying all claims. His lawyer stated at the time, “Brad has owned everything he’s responsible for from day one – unlike the other side – but he’s not going to own anything he didn’t do.”

The fallout from their separation has seen some of their children opt to change their surnames. In May 2025, Shiloh Jolie-Pitt filed documents to drop her father’s surname shortly after turning 18. Vivienne also appears to have dropped her father’s name, and Zahara reportedly introduced herself as Zahara Markey Jolie when joining Spelman College’s Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

On December 30, 2024, after years of legal battles, their divorce was officially finalised. Jolie’s lawyer, James Simon, told the Daily Mail that Jolie was “relieved this one part is over” and described her as “exhausted.” He noted that Jolie and the children had left the properties shared with Pitt and had since focused on finding peace and healing.

The Mechanics of the Moment: Who Actually Took the Selfie?

While Ellen DeGeneres initiated the selfie and was the one to upload it to Twitter, it was Bradley Cooper who physically captured the iconic image. Fred Graver, who worked on Twitter’s TV team at the time, revealed in a blog post that DeGeneres’s initial plan was a simple selfie with Meryl Streep. However, as she approached Streep, other stars spontaneously joined in.

Graver described the moment: “If you ever have a chance to watch a tape of Ellen going down to Streep, you’ll see the look of panic quickly fly across her face as her selfie with Meryl suddenly becomes a selfie with Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong’o, Julia Roberts, Jared Leto, Kevin Spacey and – holding the camera – Bradley Cooper.” He added that DeGeneres’s face showed a “shocked look” when Cooper took the camera, wondering if he would know what to do.

Cooper, of course, did. The selfie’s rapid spread – retweeted 750,000 times in 45 minutes – famously caused Twitter to briefly go offline, a testament to its immediate and overwhelming impact. The green room buzzed with the news that DeGeneres had “LITERALLY broken Twitter.” And so, this star-studded snapshot became a defining moment in both pop culture and social media history.
