Mavericks Launch Season with Super Style

Mavericks Kick Off Super Netball Season with Dominant Victory

The freshly revamped Melbourne Mavericks have announced their arrival on the Super Netball scene with a commanding 61-52 win over the Giants in Bendigo, marking their maiden round-one triumph. Both teams, having missed out on finals contention last year, were eager to set a positive tone for the new season. The Mavericks, in particular, showcased a significant transformation, welcoming four new faces to their roster following a substantial player turnover in the post-2025 period.

The strategic recruitment of new talent proved to be a masterstroke, with former Giants stalwarts Jamie-Lee Price and Maddie Hay making an immediate impact. Price, a celebrated Diamonds superstar, and Hay, stepping in as maternity cover, formed a formidable mid-court partnership that was instrumental in securing the nine-point victory. Adding to the Mavericks’ strength was captain Amy Parmenter, who celebrated her 100th Super Netball match with a standout performance at wing defence, proving a constant challenge for the Sydney-based Giants.

Price’s exceptional contribution, including an impressive 21 goal-assists, earned her the coveted player of the match award. Reflecting on the game, Price acknowledged the initial challenges of a new team finding its rhythm. “It was a pretty hectic game, there were lots of errors from both teams,” she told Fox Sports. “You can definitely tell that we’re a new team and are trying to figure each other out, but I was really proud of how we stuck with it and I thought we did a really good job.”

The Mavericks established an early lead, holding a three-point advantage at the first break. They managed to extend this lead to six goals by halftime, with the scoreboard reading 30-24 in their favour. The attacking prowess of Shimona Nelson and former Lightning goaler Reilley Batcheldor was on full display in the circle, contributing significantly to their first-half dominance.

Under the guidance of new coach Gerard Murphy, who took over from Tracey Neville, the Mavericks demonstrated their depth and tactical flexibility. The introduction of Uneeq Palavi at goal shooter proved to be another astute move. Palavi, who secured her first full-time Super Netball contract this season, is a Tongan international. She made a notable contribution, sinking 11 goals from 15 attempts, including five crucial two-point super shots that proved vital in maintaining momentum.

The Giants mounted a spirited comeback in the third quarter, narrowing the deficit to a single point. However, a well-timed two-point super shot from Batcheldor helped the Mavericks regain their composure and extend their lead. They finished the quarter with a five-point buffer, 43-38.

Despite the valiant efforts of the Giants’ attacking force, featuring Matisse Letherbarrow and Sophie Dwyer, and the defensive presence of Kiwi goal defence Jane Watson, the Victorian outfit held firm. They continued to build on their lead in the final quarter, ultimately clinching a comfortable and well-deserved victory. The Mavericks’ strong start signals their intent to be a major force in the 2024 Super Netball season.

Key Performers for the Mavericks:
