Beyond the Buffet: Luxury Cruises Embrace the Art World
Forget endless buffets and predictable onboard entertainment; the latest frontier in luxury cruising is a world away from the everyday – it’s art. From world-renowned masterpieces adorning grand atriums to hands-on workshops with contemporary creatives, cruise lines are transforming their vessels into floating galleries and artistic havens. This burgeoning trend is redefining the high-end sailing experience, offering passengers a chance to engage with art in unprecedented ways.
A Museum at Sea: Curated Collections Take Centre Stage
Luxury cruise lines are no longer content with generic wall art. Instead, they are amassing substantial art collections, treating their ships as extensions of prestigious museums. Regent Seven Seas Cruises, for instance, unveiled a remarkable 1,600-piece collection on its newest ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur, in 2023.
Andrea DeMarco, President of Regent Seven Seas Cruises, highlights the meticulous effort behind these collections: “With each new ship, our team works tirelessly to identify and source the most impressive array of art pieces, building a collection that would be enviable by most modern-day museums.”

This extensive collection boasts a truly unique centrepiece: a specially commissioned Fabergé egg, the first and only one to have a permanent home at sea. Beyond this imperial treasure, the Seven Seas Grandeur features a breathtaking 12-metre-tall hand-woven tapestry by Brazilian artist Walter Goldfarb, a striking installation in the ship’s atrium. Adding another layer of artistic sophistication, a custom-made bronze and glass Bonsai Cherry Tree Sculpture by Savoy Studios greets guests at the entrance to the pan-Asian restaurant, blending natural aesthetics with fine craftsmanship.
Art expert Bleu Bosworth, founder and dealer of contemporary gallery Optima Contemporary, observes that these onboard exhibitions reflect a broader shift in how art is consumed: “A cruise ship allows art to exist outside the conventional white-cube gallery and to be encountered in a much more organic way by a global audience.” He further elaborates, “In many ways, that aligns with the ethos of many contemporary artists, particularly those working in urban or public art, whose work was never intended to exist only within institutional walls.”
From Picasso to Warhol: Iconic Artists Sail the Seas
The allure of the art world extends to the titans of the industry. Cruise lines are curating collections that feature works by household names, ensuring a sophisticated aesthetic for their discerning passengers.
Bosworth emphasizes the quality of these onboard displays: “The strongest cruise collections treat art with the same curatorial rigour you would expect from a major gallery or museum, selecting works that have a voice, a point of view, and a cultural relevance, rather than simply filling space.”
Oceania Cruises exemplifies this commitment, showcasing over 2,000 original works personally selected by its founder, Frank J. Del Rio, and co-founder, Bob Binder. These executives reportedly travelled the globe, meticulously choosing each piece. The result is a diverse collection gracing their ships, featuring iconic artists like Picasso and Miró, alongside contemporary masters such as Robert Mars and Damien Hirst. The collection also champions emerging talents like Li Domíguez Fong and Carlos Luna, offering a balanced representation of artistic expression. In a poignant tribute to Del Rio’s Cuban heritage, the ships also proudly display works by celebrated Cuban artists including Wifredo Lam, Cundo Bermúdez, and René Portocarrero.

Explora Journeys’ flagship, Explora I, presents guests with limited-edition screen prints and lithographs by legendary pop artists Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. To deepen guests’ appreciation, onboard lectures delivered by art curators delve into the stories behind these influential pieces. Uniworld’s elegantly appointed ships are also renowned for their eclectic interiors, each corner thoughtfully adorned with stellar art. Passengers can admire works by Matisse and Chagall, as well as Picasso and Miró. The SS Bon Voyage, which navigates the picturesque Bordeaux region, features Miró’s evocative “Figure in the Night” painting prominently displayed in a suite. Meanwhile, the SS Beatrice, cruising the Rhine and Danube rivers, mesmerizes with its opulent design, including marble floors, mirrored walls, and exquisite Murano glass chandeliers. The lobby is further enhanced by a vibrant, life-sized glass horse sculpture by Pino Signoretto, a luminary in 21st-century glass artistry.
More Than Just Viewing: Interactive Art Experiences at Sea
The integration of art on cruise ships goes beyond passive observation. Many lines are now offering interactive experiences, including art auctions, live demonstrations, and hands-on workshops, allowing passengers to become active participants in the creative process.
Park West Gallery, a well-known art dealer, has established partnerships with numerous cruise lines to host lively onboard art auctions. These events are often high-energy affairs, complete with complimentary champagne, attracting guests seeking both entertainment and the potential to acquire unique pieces. While securing a Picasso might be out of reach, attendees can often find appealing works by artists such as Alexandre Renoir, a descendant of the famed Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Orlando Quevedo, a Cuban artist celebrated for his magic realist creations.

Celebrity Cruises has joined forces with Hollywood Hot Glass, where skilled demonstrators craft stunning glass sculptures in a scorching 2,000°C oven. This captivating process is a highlight for many guests. For those eager to try their hand, Celebrity Cruises also offers sessions where passengers can learn to create their own personalised glass souvenir under the guidance of an artist.
Windstar Cruises specialises in art-themed voyages, providing guests with opportunities to witness live art installations and partake in painting workshops. A recent “Masterpieces at Sea” journey aboard the Star Legend included an art historian who delivered insightful presentations on art history and forms directly connected to the cruise’s ports of call: Livorno, Nice, and Barcelona, enriching the cultural tapestry of the voyage.
