The 2026 AFL season has barely begun for the Essendon Football Club, and already the alarm bells are ringing loud and clear. A crushing 10-goal defeat at the hands of Hawthorn has left club legend Matthew Lloyd incandescent with rage, and has placed senior coach Brad Scott firmly in the firing line.
The opening stanza at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday night offered a glimmer of hope, with the contest appearing relatively even. However, as the match wore on, Hawthorn significantly lifted their intensity, exposing a glaring lack of pace and preparedness within the Essendon ranks. While Zach Merrett, a figure of much pre-season speculation regarding a potential trade to the Hawks, managed a solitary moment of brilliance with a well-taken goal, it proved to be a rare highlight in an otherwise dismal performance.
The opposition ran rampant, particularly in the second and third quarters, where they amassed an impressive 13 goals from just 23 scoring opportunities. This clinical efficiency from Hawthorn starkly contrasted with Essendon’s struggles.
Matthew Lloyd, a revered figure in Essendon’s history with a remarkable career tally of 926 goals, did not hold back in his assessment of the team’s performance. Speaking on 3AW Radio, he described the display as a “horror show.”
“They were out of their depth, they were so poor defensively,” Lloyd fumed. “It is the way they lost, alarm bells would be ringing. Watching it live, the players don’t know what to do. A lot of them were lazy.”
Lloyd’s concern extended beyond a single disappointing outing. “I’m really concerned at what I saw. It is deflating, because (for me) it has been a weakness of the club in Brad Scott’s time (as head coach).”
The statistics paint a grim picture. Essendon has now suffered an alarming 14 consecutive losses, with their last victory dating back to May of the previous year against Richmond. The pressure is mounting on Brad Scott, and if he cannot swiftly galvanise his playing group, he could become the first AFL senior coach to face the axe in 2026.
Despite the overwhelming margin of defeat, Scott attempted to find positives in the performance of two debutants. Dyson Sharp impressed by kicking two goals, while Max Kondogiannis contributed 15 disposals in his first outing.
“There are reasons to be optimistic,” Scott stated, attempting to inject some confidence. “We’ve just got to execute better than we are at the moment, (and) pretty quickly. Our (playing) group is resilient, but there’s a gulf between where we are right now and where the best teams are.”
The Bombers face a challenging run of fixtures in the coming weeks. Their next match is against Port Adelaide on March 22, followed by a clash with fellow struggling side North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium just six days later. The team’s ability to rebound from this demoralising defeat will be crucial in determining the early trajectory of their 2026 campaign and, perhaps, the future of their coach.
The coming weeks will be a significant test for Brad Scott and his Essendon side. They must demonstrate a rapid improvement in performance and attitude to quell the rising tide of criticism and avoid further descent down the AFL ladder.
