Comedian Joanne McNally has found herself at the centre of a rather unusual online storm after introducing her new beau, Fionn, to her followers. Far from a typical celebrity romance announcement, Fionn’s debut has ignited a wave of speculation, with some suggesting he might be an AI-generated creation. McNally, known for her sharp wit and candid online presence, has responded with her signature humour, playfully shutting down the outlandish theories.
In February, McNally shared glimpses of Fionn with her online community, an act that, to her surprise, prompted a flood of eyebrow-raising comments and media speculation. The comedian addressed these rumours head-on with a healthy dose of sarcasm.
“It has come to my attention that several media outlets are suggesting that my new partner, Fionn, is some sort of AI-generated fake photo opportunity and that I’m not actually living with him in his six-bed, four-bath, south-facing penthouse in Walthamstow,” McNally posted, her words dripping with playful disbelief.
She didn’t stop there, turning her attention to a particular point of contention: Fionn’s frequent lack of a shirt. McNally addressed the accusations of him being “a thirsty c**t” or “showboating” with a surprising and humorous explanation.
“Firstly, how dare you,” she quipped. “Secondly, regarding the topless issue that so many of you have chosen to focus on. Fionn has recently been diagnosed with a very severe form of ADHD, and THAT is why he is always exposed from the waist up, it’s ’cause he forgets to bring a top, it’s part of his condition.” She continued, stating that such accusations were “unfounded and frankly insulting to all and anyone struggling with neurodivergence.”
McNally expressed relief that Fionn remained “off grid” and thus unaware of the “reckless rumours circulating about him personally and us as a real-life couple.” She concluded her statement with a mock threat, “Shame on you all, legal letters are coming.”
True to form, McNally’s inner circle of celebrity friends quickly jumped on board to fuel the hilarious prank. Fellow comedians Katherine Ryan and Emma Doran playfully expressed their delight at “meeting” Fionn, adding to the online buzz.
The banter escalated with comments from various personalities:
The comedic saga continued when McNally appeared on The Late Late Show with host Patrick Kielty. Naturally, Kielty couldn’t resist probing the comedian about her “new relationship.”
McNally, ever the quick wit, responded, “You seem a little jealous Patrick!” before diving back into the AI narrative. “Oh, yeah, that’s Fionn, I invented him, he is absolutely mad about me, I resent the accusations that he is AI,” she joked. She then delivered a punchline that resonated with many: “I mean, I’ve dated guys with no intelligence, so artificial intelligence is great.”
The entire episode highlights McNally’s masterful ability to control the narrative with humour and her willingness to engage her audience in her personal life, albeit with a healthy dose of absurdity. Whether Fionn is real or a sophisticated AI, he has certainly captured the public’s imagination, proving to be a far more entertaining digital companion than any other online creation.
