Kharg Island: A Critical Nexus in Iran’s Oil Exports and a Potential Flashpoint

Kharg Island, a vital hub for Iran’s oil exports, has emerged as a significant focal point amidst escalating regional tensions. US President Donald Trump recently declared that American forces had “obliterated” all Iranian military defences on the island, a move that underscores its strategic importance. Located in the Persian Gulf, approximately 25 kilometres off the Iranian mainland, Kharg Island is a relatively small landmass, spanning about 20 square kilometres. However, its significance far outweighs its physical size.

This island serves as Iran’s principal oil export terminal, handling an astonishing 90 per cent of the nation’s oil exports. The island boasts long jetties capable of accommodating supertankers, providing access to deep waters that mainland ports often lack. Oil from Iran’s most productive fields is transported to Kharg Island via an extensive pipeline network. Its strategic positioning, south of the Strait of Hormuz – a crucial waterway for global oil transit – further amplifies its importance. Iran has previously used the Strait of Hormuz as a lever of pressure, at times threatening to disrupt shipping, which could impact a fifth of the world’s oil supply.

The Recent Strikes and Their Economic Ramifications

The recent US action, as announced by President Trump on his social media platform, Truth Social, involved a significant bombing raid targeting military infrastructure on Kharg Island. Trump described it as “one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East,” asserting that “every MILITARY target” on the island had been “totally obliterated.” Crucially, he stated that no oil infrastructure was attacked.

However, the implications of such strikes are primarily economic, according to Middle East analyst Amin Saikal from the Australian National University. Speaking to ABC News Channel, Saikal noted that while the island might not be “that crucial to the operations of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard” from a purely military standpoint, it is an “economic lifeline for Iran” and a “major source of revenue for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard.” This highlights the delicate balance the US is attempting to strike: applying pressure without crippling global energy markets.

The Threat of Targeting Oil Infrastructure

President Trump has explicitly stated his willingness to target the island’s oil infrastructure should Iran interfere with shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. He conveyed this sentiment on Truth Social, writing, “For reasons of decency, I have chosen NOT to wipe out the Oil Infrastructure on the Island. However, should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with the Free and Safe Passage of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision.”

The Strait of Hormuz has already witnessed considerable disruption, with over 1,000 cargo ships reportedly held up during recent conflicts. Attacks on other oil refineries, depots, and tankers in the region have contributed to a rise in international oil prices. He stated, “I can’t answer a question like that and you shouldn’t even be asking it,” before adding that the island was “not high on the list, but it’s one of so many different things.” He also remarked, “I can change my mind in seconds.” This interview preceded the US strike on the island’s military defences by a day, suggesting a rapid shift in strategic considerations.

The Prospect of Occupation and Escalation

The possibility of a US occupation of Kharg Island has also been a subject of discussion. President Trump had previously indicated that the conflict was “very complete, pretty much.” However, more recent reports suggest a potential escalation, with indications of the relocation of at least 2,500 marines and an amphibious warship from their deployment in Japan. Amphibious assault ships are specifically designed to transport and deploy ground troops into hostile territory.

Dr. Saikal views a potential US seizure of Kharg Island as akin to an “occupation.” He warns that such an action would likely provide the Iranian regime with “more ammunition… to hit back as hard as possible.” He further elaborates that Iran could retaliate by targeting numerous oil facilities across the region, potentially exacerbating oil shortages and negatively impacting the global economy.
