Dermatologist Lars Norlén, associated with Karolinska University Hospital, elaborates on this profound connection, noting how the significance we attach to our hair has evolved dramatically over time.

Fast forward to today, and we see a contrasting trend in some military circles, where a shaved head can symbolise discipline and a different kind of power. Unravelling the Causes of Hair Loss

The phenomenon of hair loss is multifaceted, with a range of contributing factors. As highlighted by Lars Norlén, several elements can impact hair health, including stress, underlying medical conditions, prescribed medications, and genetic predisposition.

Stress and Hair Shedding:
Stress, whether it’s physical or psychological, can trigger temporary hair loss. This often manifests as an increased shedding of hair, and in many instances, the hair will begin to regrow within three to six months once the stressors are removed.

Androgenetic Alopecia: A Common Culprit:
The most prevalent form of hair loss is known as androgenetic alopecia, often referred to as hormonal hair loss. Norlén points out a crucial distinction: unlike stress-induced shedding, hair lost due to androgenetic alopecia typically does not grow back.

Expert Advice for Healthier Hair

Beyond the underlying causes, the way we care for our hair plays a significant role in its overall quality and appearance. Sofia Geideby, a renowned hairdresser recognised as Sweden’s Hairdresser of the Year in 2025, emphasises that a personalised approach to hair care is essential.

Geideby explains that the act of washing hair itself is rarely the culprit behind damage. Instead, it’s the subsequent styling practices that often cause the most harm. This includes excessive blow-drying and the frequent use of heated styling tools like straighteners and curling irons.

“There really isn’t one piece of advice that suits everyone, because hair is very individual, just like we humans are,” Geideby articulates, underscoring the need for tailored hair care routines.

Key Hair Care Recommendations:

  • Mindful Washing: Geideby suggests limiting hair washing to no more than twice a week. This can help preserve the natural oils that protect and nourish the scalp and hair.
  • Heat Tool Caution: Be judicious with heat styling tools. When use is unavoidable, employ heat protectant sprays and use the lowest effective temperature setting.
  • Volume-Boosting Products: For those with thinning hair, certain products designed to add volume can create the illusion of fuller, thicker hair. These can be a valuable addition to a hair care arsenal.
