A comprehensive search operation in the rugged north-east of New South Wales has located the wreckage of a crashed helicopter, but the pilot remains unaccounted for. Authorities confirmed the discovery of the aircraft in dense bushland north of Drake, within the Tenterfield Shire, at approximately 2:00 PM.
The helicopter had departed from the Gold Coast yesterday morning at 9:00 AM, with its intended destination being Mudgee. However, it failed to arrive, triggering an extensive, multi-agency search effort across remote and challenging terrain.
Emergency services, including State Emergency Service (SES) crews, a dedicated rescue helicopter, police, and multiple Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA) Rescue teams, have been meticulously combing both the air and ground. The last known sighting of the aircraft was as it flew over the Cataract National Park area in Boorook, approximately 55 kilometres north of Tenterfield, yesterday afternoon.
The search, which was suspended overnight due to hazardous conditions, recommenced this morning. Reports indicate that the pilot was the sole occupant of the helicopter. The man, believed to be in his mid-70s, was not found at the crash site.
Emergency services personnel are scheduled to return to the scene tomorrow to continue their investigations. Volunteer crews will persist with their ground searches of the surrounding area.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has confirmed that safety investigators, travelling from Brisbane and Canberra, will be deployed to examine the helicopter wreckage. Their methodical investigation will involve several key stages:
In addition to the on-site activities, ATSB investigators will also undertake crucial interviews. These will include:
The ATSB stated that this comprehensive evidence-gathering process is vital to understanding the circumstances leading to the crash and to making recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Authorities are appealing to the public for any information that may assist in the ongoing search for the pilot or shed light on the helicopter’s flight path. Anyone with relevant details is urged to contact the police or the ATSB directly. The challenging nature of the terrain and the remote location continue to pose significant difficulties for search teams.
