In a dramatic upset, the ACT Brumbies have succumbed to their first-ever defeat against the Fijian Drua, falling 42-27 in a Super Rugby Pacific clash that saw the Canberra-based outfit heavily reshuffled. This marks the Brumbies’ second consecutive loss in the competition.

Coach Stephen Larkham opted for significant changes to his squad, introducing ten new faces. This strategic move was driven by a combination of player management protocols and existing injury concerns. The Brumbies were coming off a heart-wrenching, last-gasp 34-31 loss to the Queensland Reds, and Larkham’s decision to rotate players highlighted the challenges of a demanding schedule.

The heavily-rotated Brumbies team faced a formidable challenge on Saturday. Not only did they have to contend with a revitalised Fijian Drua side, enjoying a week’s rest and buoyed by a passionate home crowd, but they also battled the challenging wet and sultry conditions that enveloped the sold-out Four R Stadium in Ba, Fiji.

The first half saw a back-and-forth contest, with the home side ultimately establishing a 20-12 lead by halftime. Following the break, the Drua intensified their pressure, extending their advantage to a commanding 20-point deficit with less than 30 minutes left on the clock. Despite the Brumbies managing to score three tries in the latter stages, the Drua held firm, thwarting the visitors’ aspirations of reclaiming the top spot on the Super Rugby Pacific ladder.

Brumbies fullback Andy Muirhead reflected on the match, telling FBC Sports, “They got into a bit of Fijian rugby, and we weren’t clinical enough to close out opportunities. We’ve got to have a goldfish memory about this one, review it quickly, and move on.”

This victory represents a significant achievement for the Fijian Drua, marking their second win against a top-two opponent this season. Earlier in February, they had defeated the then-ladder-leading Hurricanes 25-20 in a home fixture. This latest triumph was particularly special as it was the Drua’s inaugural match played in Ba.

Drua co-captain Frank Lomani shared the team’s elation, stating, “We came down on Tuesday and we spoke about a historic moment here in Ba and that we had to perform. It was so energetic. We could feel them (the crowd). They were with us on the field.”

Despite the disappointing result, the Brumbies can draw some positives from the performance of emerging talent. Twenty-one-year-old back-rower Toby Macpherson impressed with a brace of tries on his first start for the team. Meanwhile, Wallabies star Rob Valetini delivered a typically robust performance in his 100th Super Rugby game, accumulating 44 metres gained and making 17 tackles.

The scoring opened with Hudson Creighton crossing for the Brumbies. This came after Kye Oates broke through the Drua’s defence, offloaded to Klayton Thorn, who then executed a well-placed grubber kick for the diving Brumbies centre to finish.

The Drua responded quickly through blindside flanker Etonia Waqa. However, their momentum was temporarily halted when teammate Mesake Doge was shown a yellow card. Capitalising on the numerical advantage, Macpherson crashed over for his first try in the 25th minute.

The Drua then responded with a flurry of tries from Elia Canakaivata, Sairusi Ravudi, and Ilaisa Droasese, establishing a significant lead. Macpherson, however, demonstrated his opportunistic nature by scoring his second try from a loose ball. Later, a well-linked play between Ryan Lonergan and Creighton managed to cut the deficit to 10 points.

Even as the clock wound down, Muirhead managed to find the try line in the 80th minute, but it proved to be a mere consolation. This late score came after Droasese had already crossed for his second try in the 70th minute, sealing the historic victory for the Fijian Drua.
