Australia: Stand Tall, Stand Alone

Global Turmoil and Australia’s Shifting Landscape

The escalating conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine are casting a long shadow, prompting discussions about global stability and the future of international trade. Amidst this uncertainty, Australia, like many nations, is being compelled to re-evaluate its reliance on global supply chains and consider strategies for greater self-sufficiency.

The ongoing war in the Middle East, particularly its prolonged nature and the perceived lack of a clear exit strategy from key players, has been described as an “unmitigated disaster.” However, some commentators suggest that in the long term, these global disruptions could foster a more independent international landscape. This shift might encourage countries to move away from an over-reliance on ultra-free trade models, which have historically dictated access to essential imports.

For Australia, this translates to an immediate and pressing need to bolster domestic reserves of critical resources. This includes maintaining larger stockpiles of petroleum fuel and fertilisers essential for agricultural production. Furthermore, the vulnerabilities in the global supply of electronic equipment, much of which is sourced from overseas, are becoming increasingly apparent.

Beyond resource security, the current geopolitical climate could also spur a more interventionist approach from the government in managing the national economy. Some believe this could lead to greater government control over economic operations and the redistribution of wealth, a departure from the “free-market neoliberalism” that has been seen by some as detrimental to the nation’s interests.

Fueling Conflict, Fueling Concern

The government’s efforts to ensure fuel supplies for Australia’s vital food-producing regions, even if it means utilising “dirtier petrol,” are noteworthy. However, the sheer scale of military fuel consumption provides a stark reminder of the immense resources dedicated to conflict. It has been highlighted that a military jet can consume as much fuel in a single hour as an average car driver might use over seven years.

This fact takes on added significance as speculation mounts regarding the price of Brent crude oil, with projections suggesting it could reach $200 per barrel if the conflict in Iran escalates or continues unabated. The interconnectedness of global energy markets and geopolitical stability is thus brought into sharp focus.

Accountability on the Global Stage

Calls for accountability for those initiating international conflicts are growing. One prominent voice in Europe has argued that Australia should take a leading role in advocating for Vladimir Putin to face a “Nuremberg-style trial” for his actions in Ukraine. This sentiment extends to demands for similar accountability for other leaders involved in military actions.

Specifically, there are arguments that figures like Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu should also be held to the same standard for initiating military engagements in Iran. The legitimacy of such actions is further questioned, with the assertion that Mr. Trump’s involvement in the war in Iran may contravene the US Constitution, which vests the authority to initiate war solely with Congress.

Reflections on Past Conflicts and Future Decisions

The historical record of US involvement in conflicts since World War Two offers a sobering perspective. The outcomes in Korea are described as an “honourable draw,” while Vietnam is labelled a “bad loss.” The situation in Iraq remains uncertain, and Afghanistan is also categorised as a “bad loss.” The current situation in Iran is awaiting a definitive outcome. This track record, critics suggest, stands in contrast to any “chest-beating” rhetoric regarding military prowess.

Political Dynamics and Electoral Strategies

The intricate relationship between governing parties and their opposition is crucial for long-term political viability. When a governing party is perceived to be aligning too closely with the opposition, potentially diminishing its own standing in the eyes of the electorate, it risks undermining its own future success. A party’s ability to govern effectively is not solely dependent on its policies and actions but also on its approach to defining and engaging with a worthy opposition.

Echoes of History in Modern Diplomacy

Concerns have been raised that the government’s plan to deploy military personnel to Arab states carries an unsettling resemblance to the lead-up to Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. At that time, military personnel were initially sent as advisors, a move that preceded a broader declaration of war. The memory of personnel returning home in body bags, even before the widely cited “domino effect” was used to justify support for the US, prompts the question: are we witnessing a recurrence of historical patterns?

Broader Calls for Political Transformation

In light of ongoing international tensions, some voices are calling for more comprehensive political change. Beyond the immediate focus on Iran, there are suggestions that “regime change” might also be considered in Israel and the United States, and potentially in other nations.

Debates on National Identity and Social Policy

Discussions surrounding national identity and social policy are also surfacing. An article referencing a politician’s longing for a perceived “mythical Australia of times past” has sparked a humorous take on natural contraception methods. The “Billings method,” a form of natural family planning, has been the subject of a long-standing joke: “What do you call people who practise the Billings method of contraception? Answer: Parents!”

Another commentary strongly endorses an article that critically examined a politician’s proposal to revitalise a political coalition’s electoral prospects by advocating for a return to a past era. This perspective argues that such plans are immature and represent a step backward, effectively stating that “no more need be said” as the author “nailed it.”

Political Authority and Medical Expertise

A pointed question is posed: “What happens when a politician with no medical training self-appoints themselves as the highest medical authority in the land?” The implied answer, in the context of a specific individual, highlights concerns about the intersection of political ambition and medical expertise.

Positive Reforms for Home Buyers

Encouraging news has emerged regarding new reforms introduced by the Victorian government aimed at simplifying the process of purchasing a home. Two key initiatives are the disclosure of reserve prices and the implementation of a single, standardised building inspection, akin to a car’s roadworthy certificate. These changes are being hailed as a significant improvement for prospective homeowners.

One individual shared their personal experience of purchasing their first home last year, highlighting how these reforms would have substantially reduced the stress involved. The period of uncertainty and the constant questioning during the inspection process – “Am I wasting my money on a building inspection on a place that’s going to sell for way more than I expect?”, “What if I don’t get the inspection and it turns out I could have bought it?”, “Is this inspection going to be dependable?” – are now being addressed.

The current system, where buyers select their own building inspectors, involves a time-consuming search for trustworthy companies, many of which are so booked out that timely inspections are impossible. The prospect of a government-mandated and regulated inspection process is seen as a welcome alternative.

Questioning Government Priorities

An editorial questioning the Premier’s decision to abandon plans for the Commonwealth Games, particularly in light of the significant expenditure involved, has elicited a cynical response. The question is raised: “Did anyone believe a hard-left socialist government ever had any intention of staging a Commonwealth Games? Really?” This suggests a belief that the initial announcement was politically motivated rather than a genuine commitment.

The Lingering Shadow of Robo-debt

The National Anti-Corruption Commission’s investigation into the “robo-debt” scheme has revealed that while two former public servants were found to have engaged in serious corrupt conduct, insufficient admissible evidence prevented their referral to the Director of Public Prosecutions. This outcome raises critical questions about the effectiveness of anti-corruption mechanisms.

The debate centres on whether the absence of an anti-corruption watchdog is worse than having one that is perceived as ineffectual and lacking teeth. Neither scenario, it is argued, passes the “pub test” and both serve to compound the distress of victims. The robo-debt scandal caused immense and unnecessary stress, tragically leading to suicides in some cases.

The disparity between penalties for minor offences, such as unpaid parking fines, and the apparent lack of consequences for white-collar crime, including corruption, is highlighted. The question is posed: “When will consequences be commensurate with the damage inflicted?” The need for law reform to close loopholes and ensure that “admissible” evidence encompasses all true and relevant information is strongly advocated.

Unravelling Complex Puzzles

A personal anecdote about tackling the Samurai Sudoku puzzle sheds light on the importance of approaching complex challenges without undue caution. The initial belief that the puzzle had to be tackled as a whole, rather than grid by grid, was found to be “100 per cent incorrect.” The advice given is to “totally ignore that.”
