2026: Beveridge’s Bulldogs Unleashed

Western Bulldogs Roar: A Season of Unprecedented Dominance

The Western Bulldogs are experiencing a start to the AFL season that hasn’t been witnessed in quite some time. Traditionally a team blessed with immense talent but often plagued by inconsistency, the Bulldogs have kicked off the year in spectacular fashion, exceeding even their coach Luke Beveridge’s most optimistic hopes. Their campaign began with a significant victory against the reigning premiers, Brisbane, on their home turf during the Opening Round. This was swiftly followed by a comprehensive demolition of their fierce rivals, Greater Western Sydney (GWS), in Round 1.

The Bulldogs’ dominant performance against GWS at Marvel Stadium on Saturday was a masterclass in both attack and defence. The scoreboard reflected their offensive prowess, with the team racking up an impressive 21.8 (134) points. Crucially, they also demonstrated their defensive fortitude, holding a potent GWS forward line to a mere 7.11 (53) points. This dual-threat capability is a testament to the hard yards put in by Beveridge and his coaching staff.

Fortifying the Defence, Unleashing the Attack

Beveridge revealed that a significant focus of their pre-season and early-season work has been on bolstering their defensive structures without sacrificing their attacking flair. “As much as we have gone to work on a handful of things that hopefully improve defensive aggregate, our plan was to always make sure it didn’t compromise our ability to score,” he explained. He acknowledged that while their defence was tested in the previous week against Brisbane, who managed 106 points, the overall balance is what’s pleasing. “It’s going to be hard to minimise scoring every week, so I think it is just on balance; it’s equal terms. We want to score but you would have to say today was a pretty good source pressure and defensive effort.”

Stars Align: Bontempelli and the Twin Towers Lead the Charge

The Bulldogs’ abundance of star players were in scintillating form under the Marvel Stadium roof. Captain Marcus Bontempelli was at his absolute best, a rampaging force who finished the match with a remarkable three goals, 33 disposals, six clearances, an astounding 677 metres gained, and 11 score involvements. His leadership and all-around contribution were pivotal to the team’s success.

Complementing Bontempelli’s brilliance were the twin towers of Aaron Naughton and Sam Darcy. Naughton proved a constant threat in attack, booting six goals and showcasing his aerial prowess with five contested marks. Darcy was equally impressive, contributing four goals to the scoreboard.

Beveridge was effusive in his praise for his captain’s performance. “He played an extraordinary game,” he stated. “It’s his 13th year, it has gone in a flash. It’s rare that I stand in front of the group and blow smoke, because I don’t want him to feel uncomfortable, he knows what I think of him, what I feel about him. But after today, it was definitely necessary to acknowledge how well he played. He was quite incredible really.” He also lauded Naughton’s contribution: “Aaron’s game was extraordinary as well. He was just a powerhouse down there. Those two individuals had ridiculously good games.”

The Unsung Heroes: Mastering the One-Percenters

While the headline-grabbing performances of the stars were undeniable, Beveridge highlighted that what truly impressed him was the team’s collective execution of the “one-percenters.” This included their ability to apply crucial spoils and effectively defend against turnovers.

“I felt like we were able to delay (the Giants after turnover) enough and get them into spots we could manage and then get a look at a spoil and not give away any tap ins, not give them blatant overlap over the top balls into their offensive paddock,” he elaborated. This meticulous attention to detail in defensive actions prevented GWS from gaining momentum through turnovers.

Furthermore, Beveridge emphasised the team’s improved management of their own errors. “I thought we managed our own mistakes reasonably well, which is so important. As much as we ended up scoring pretty heavily there was a period in the first half where we weren’t executing from a quality point of view as well as we would have liked.” This ability to rectify lapses in execution, even during periods of high scoring, speaks volumes about the team’s maturity and focus. The Western Bulldogs appear to have found a potent combination of offensive firepower and defensive discipline, setting them up for a compelling season ahead.
