Xi Warns Military Against Disloyalty and Corruption

China’s top diplomat, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, expressed strong concerns over recent military actions in the Middle East during a press conference held at the National People’s Congress in Beijing on the 8th. He described the U.S. and Israel’s airstrikes on Iran as a “war that should not have happened” and called for an immediate ceasefire. Wang emphasized the importance of ending hostilities, stating, “This war is one that should not have occurred and benefits no one.” His remarks were seen as a direct critique of the ongoing conflict and its broader implications.

Wang also referenced historical texts to reinforce his message. He quoted Han Feizi, a philosopher from the Warring States period, saying, “War is a weapon of destruction and must be used with caution (兵者, 凶器也, 不可不審用).” Additionally, he cited “The Faults of Qin,” a historical text that details the reasons behind the collapse of the Qin dynasty. Wang noted, “If righteousness and justice are not practiced, the dynamics of offense and defense will shift (仁義不施而攻守之勢異也),” and urged major powers to uphold justice and contribute positively to peace in the region.

These statements were interpreted as targeting the United States, given its involvement in the conflict. However, Wang also expressed openness to Sino-U.S. cooperation, especially in light of President Donald Trump’s upcoming visit to Beijing later this month. He emphasized the importance of communication between leaders, calling it “the linchpin for improving and developing Sino-U.S. relations.” This suggests a cautious but constructive approach to diplomatic engagement.

Regarding Trump’s proposal for a framework of “joint governance” between the U.S. and China, Wang responded by reaffirming China’s stance. He stated, “China will not take the old path of pursuing hegemony as it grows stronger, and it does not agree with the idea of ‘joint governance by major powers.’” This response highlights China’s resistance to any form of external influence or control, even in the context of collaboration.

Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping, who also serves as the head of the Chinese military, addressed the delegation of the People’s Liberation Army and the Armed Police Force at the National People’s Congress on the 7th. He stressed the importance of maintaining ideological purity within the military, stating, “The military is where guns are held. Those harboring different thoughts about the party must not exist within the military.” He also emphasized the need for an unwavering anti-corruption campaign, declaring, “There should be no hiding place for corrupt elements.”

Xi further highlighted the significance of modernizing the military, stating, “Modernized weapons and equipment must be controlled by revolutionized talents.” These remarks are seen as a warning to the military following the recent downfall of Zhang Youxia, the second-highest-ranking military official, in January. The emphasis on loyalty and discipline underscores the leadership’s commitment to maintaining control and unity within the armed forces.

As the Two Sessions, China’s largest annual political event, continue, Beijing has been issuing a series of messages aimed at both domestic and international audiences. These include statements on foreign policy, military reforms, and internal governance. The events reflect the government’s focus on stability, security, and the maintenance of its global standing.

In addition to these developments, there are also mentions of various membership programs offered by local media outlets. These include a 5900 won membership plan for general readers, a 2900 won option for newspaper subscribers, and a special package offering 55000 won worth of newspapers and magazines. Subscribers can also enjoy 7000 points redeemable for shopping, highlighting the growing trend of integrating digital services with traditional media offerings.

Overall, the current political landscape in China reflects a combination of assertive diplomacy, internal reforms, and strategic messaging. As the country continues to navigate complex international relations and domestic challenges, its leaders remain focused on maintaining stability and advancing national interests.
