The World Rally Championship (WRC) is a prestigious motorsport event where top teams and drivers from around the world compete to showcase their skills, strategy, and endurance. Like any other sport, the financial aspect plays a crucial role in the WRC, with drivers earning substantial sums based on their contracts and performance.

As the 2026 Safari Rally unfolds in Naivasha, the focus is not only on the competition but also on how much the drivers earn for their efforts. With challenging weather conditions affecting the race, the stakes are high, both on and off the track.

The 2026 Safari Rally Begins

The third leg of the 2026 World Rally Championship (WRC) kicked off on Thursday afternoon, with Deputy President Kithure Kindiki flagging off the cars at the Wildlife Research and Training Institute (WRTI) in Naivasha. The rally will continue through Sunday, with drivers competing on the Wolf Power Stage at Hell’s Gate.

WRC drivers typically have demanding schedules, often traveling across the globe to participate in multiple events throughout the season. Their earnings depend largely on the contracts they negotiate with their respective teams, which can vary significantly based on experience, performance, and market value.

Top Earners in the WRC

According to various reports, Thierry Neuville is currently the highest-paid driver in the WRC. The Belgian driver, who competes for Hyundai Motorsport, earns approximately $2 million (KSh 258 million) per season. Although he has yet to win in Kenya, Neuville secured his first and only WRC title in 2024.

Sebastian Ogier, a nine-time champion, reportedly earned $2.5 million (KSh 322.5 million) per season in 2025. However, he is now competing on a part-time contract with Toyota Gazoo. Ogier has won twice in Kenya, making him a formidable competitor.

His teammate, Elfyn Evans, earns around $1 million (KSh 129 million) per season, while Ott Tanak is believed to earn between $1.5 million and $2 million annually. These figures do not include additional income from sponsorships, rally winnings, or other bonuses.

Kalle Rovanpera’s Earnings

Former WRC driver Kalle Rovanpera earned approximately €6 million during his time with Toyota Gazoo before deciding to retire from the WRC. The Finnish driver left the championship to pursue a career in the Super Formula series, with aspirations of qualifying for Formula 1. He is currently competing in Japan’s Super Formula this season.

Safari Rally 2026 Standings

The conditions in Naivasha have been particularly challenging, with heavy rainfall affecting the terrain and creating difficult driving conditions. On Friday morning, the Camp Moran 2 stage was canceled due to deteriorating roads.

Oliver Solberg took an early lead, with Toyota Gazoo dominating the stages from position 1 to 5 heading into the afternoon. “There is a lot of cleaning and a complete lottery with the rocks. I was way too careful this morning. I just want to keep it clean – as long as I keep around Evans, I’m happy,” Solberg said.

Hyundai faced some difficulties, as all three of their cars driven by Thierry Neuville, Adrien Fourmaux, and Esapekka Lappi experienced overheating issues on the second stage in Mzabibu.
