A tragic accident has left a university community in shock after a Level 200 Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) student at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) lost his life following a collision with a bus on campus. The incident occurred on Thursday, March 5, when the student was traveling to Oguaa Hall to collect his identification card for an upcoming examination.
The deceased, Mr Caleb Kweku Mensah, was riding a motorbike when the accident happened around 1500 hours along the stretch between the Amissah-Arthụr Language Centre and the Sandwich Lecture Theatre (SWLT). According to reports, his bike collided with an Ayalolo bus, resulting in severe injuries that ultimately led to his death.
Following the collision, Mr Mensah was rushed to the UCC Hospital for emergency treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead. His body was then transferred to the UCC Morgue, where it remains pending further procedures.
The university swiftly responded to the incident by reporting it to the UCC Police and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) for investigation. These authorities are now tasked with determining the circumstances surrounding the collision and identifying any potential violations or negligence.
In a statement released on Friday, March 6, the university expressed its deep sorrow over the loss of Mr Mensah. The statement conveyed the institution’s condolences to the family of the deceased and urged the university community to remain calm as the investigations continue.
The university also confirmed that it had informed the family of the incident and offered its support during this difficult time. The statement emphasized the importance of maintaining a safe environment on campus and highlighted the need for all members of the community to exercise caution, especially when navigating the premises.
The MTTD and UCC Police are currently conducting their investigations into the incident. Their findings will be crucial in understanding the cause of the collision and implementing measures to prevent similar accidents in the future. The university has pledged to cooperate fully with the authorities and ensure that all necessary steps are taken to uphold safety standards on campus.
The incident has sparked a wave of grief and reflection within the university community. Students, faculty, and staff have expressed their condolences for Mr Mensah and his family. Many have taken to social media to share messages of support and to call for increased safety measures on campus.
The tragedy serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety, particularly in areas where students and staff frequently travel between different parts of the university. As the investigations continue, the focus will remain on ensuring that such incidents do not occur again.
Mr Caleb Kweku Mensah’s untimely death is a profound loss to the University of Cape Coast and the broader community. His passing underscores the need for vigilance and responsibility in all aspects of campus life. As the university moves forward, it will strive to honor his memory by fostering a safer and more secure environment for all.
