Nancy Odindo, a seasoned Kenyan journalist with five years of experience in covering politics, news, and features across digital and print media, has reported on a recent incident involving Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale. The event took place in the Otonglo area near the Molasses Plant along the Kisumu-Busia Road.
The incident occurred as the team was returning from a Thanksgiving ceremony held in Rarieda, Siaya county, on Sunday, March 8. The group was en route to Kisumu International Airport when their vehicle was involved in an accident. According to a statement from the Ministry of Health, the crash resulted in 19 injured individuals being evacuated to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for urgent medical attention.
The Ministry of Health confirmed that two fatalities were recorded at the scene, while one more victim passed away during transport to the hospital. The ministry expressed its condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to those receiving treatment.
According to photos circulating online, a PSV matatu was also involved in the crash. The incident raised concerns among Kenyans, but the Health Cabinet Secretary, Aden Duale, confirmed that he was safe.
During an Iftar dinner with the Kenya Association of Muslim Medical Professionals (KAMMP), Duale spoke about the accident. He revealed that the team sustained injuries and urged proper medical care for them.
“On our way to Kisumu International Airport, we had a small accident, so all patients belong to me. To my team, let us help the patients in all the hospitals and make sure they are recovering very well,” he said.
Duale thanked the KAMMP leadership for convening healthcare professionals, scholars, partners, and members of the community. He noted that the spirit of compassion, generosity, and service that defines Ramadan closely mirrors the calling of the medical profession.
“Their work in professional development, medical camps, community outreach, mentorship, and student engagement continues to strengthen our healthcare ecosystem,” he stated.
The incident sparked a wave of reactions from Kenyans on social media. Some expressed concern over the safety of the officials, while others praised Duale for his response.
