The Premier League has been buzzing with discussions about the chaos surrounding set-pieces. Fans, managers, and officials have all voiced their concerns over the current state of affairs, which includes holding, fighting, pushing, kicking, and waving arms during these critical moments. Referees seem unable to manage these situations effectively, leading to questions about whether goals scored are fair or not. Several managers have even risked hefty fines from the Football Association (FA) by speaking out against the issue.
Most Premier League teams now employ set-piece coaches, who are highly skilled at teaching players how to navigate the challenges within the penalty area. This has led to an increase in players crowding the box, often preventing goalkeepers from making saves. The situation is a nightmare for officials, who find it increasingly difficult to maintain control during these moments.
During the Arsenal vs. Chelsea game, I witnessed what many would consider a chaotic scene. In my view, and that of several colleagues in the press box, Chelsea should have been awarded a penalty due to the grappling and holding by Arsenal’s William Saliba on Joao Pedro. Additionally, Declan Rice was seen tightly holding Jorrel Hato, while Jurrien Timber obstructed Trevoh Chalobah. The referee failed to act, leaving everyone in disbelief.
This kind of scenario is not unique to that particular match. It is occurring across multiple Premier League stadiums this season. David Moyes, Everton’s experienced manager, highlighted the issue, stating that referees seem reluctant to intervene. He pointed out that attackers often crowd the goalkeeper, restricting his movement, while defenders focus more on opponents than the ball itself.
News has surfaced that Nick Woltemade is unhappy at Newcastle and is considering a return to the Bundesliga. He joined the club in August 2023 for a reported £65 million, but many in Germany, including his former club chairman, believe he is not worth that amount and may struggle in the Premier League.
Woltemade’s recent performances have raised eyebrows. During a recent match, coach Eddie Howe moved him around the field, placing him in midfield before shifting him to striker and eventually taking him off after just 56 minutes. His limited touches of the ball were a cause for concern.
Supporters and club officials remain divided about Woltemade’s future at the club. Some believe he could thrive in a different environment, while others feel he needs more time to adapt.
There are growing concerns about Igor Tudor’s tenure at Tottenham Hotspur. Despite being brought in as a “firefighter” with a reputation for quick results, he has struggled to make an impact in the Premier League. His high-pressing style has not been well received, and he has criticized the physical condition of his players.
Tudor recently stated that the team is not in an optimal physical state, citing the lack of available players and the toll of playing too many games. He has introduced long and exhausting runs into daily training, which has surprised many players. However, he defended this approach by explaining that he only has 14 fully fit senior players and needs to improve the team’s physicality.
Mikel Arteta remains confident in Viktor Gyokeres, believing he is starting to rediscover his goal-scoring touch. Gyokeres has shown improvement since joining Arsenal, scoring two goals in each of his last two games. Arteta praised his dedication in training and expressed his belief that Gyokeres will continue to contribute significantly to the team.
Defending Mo Salah has become a topic of discussion, especially after his recent goal drought. However, Arne Slot continues to rely on him despite the lack of goals. Salah’s energy and football intelligence are still evident, and he has made key assists and runs down the right flank. Although his goal-scoring has dipped, his presence on the pitch still generates excitement among fans.
Marcus Rashford has expressed his desire to turn his loan move to Barcelona into a permanent deal. The 28-year-old has performed well, scoring 10 goals in 35 appearances and becoming a fan favorite at the Nou Camp. However, talks between Manchester United and Barcelona have stalled, leaving Rashford frustrated. While United might welcome the idea of removing him from their wage structure, they have been covering his salary during the loan period.
Liverpool has defended their £450 million spending spree, citing the successful acquisitions of players like Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak. Arne Slot emphasized that the club also sold players for £350 million, which is often overlooked in discussions about their spending. He also noted that several new signings have been sidelined due to injuries, affecting their ability to utilize the full potential of their squad.
