Austrian Player Secures First Week Title at Rwanda Challenger 75
Austrian tennis player Joel Schwaerzler emerged victorious in a thrilling tie-break battle against Italy’s Stefano Napolitano, winning the first-week Rwanda Challenger 75 title. The final took place at the IPRC Kigali Ecology Tennis Club on Sunday, with Schwaerzler securing a hard-fought 7–6(5), 7–6(6) victory.
The match was delayed due to heavy rainfall on Saturday, which halted play shortly after the first set ended. At that point, Schwaerzler was leading his Italian opponent. Despite the interruption, the 20-year-old remained focused and returned on Sunday to complete the match, earning 75 ATP ranking points for his win.
Before the suspension, the opening set lasted one hour and 19 minutes. Schwaerzler, who reached the final by defeating top seed and 2024 Kigali champion Marco Trungelliti, won the first set 7–6(5). When play resumed, Napolitano made a strong attempt to come back, taking a 3–2 lead in the second set. However, Schwaerzler quickly responded, forcing another tie-break before ultimately sealing the match with a 7–6(6) victory.
“I arrived late on Monday, and moving from indoor to outdoor courts was tough to adapt to. But I had been here last year and felt great playing here. In the important moments I played good tennis, and luckily I won the title,” Schwaerzler shared with Times Sport.
Following the conclusion of the first-week final, the tournament will continue with the ATP Challenger 100, scheduled to take place at the same venue from March 9 to 15.
