The holy month of Ramadan is a time for reflection, spiritual growth, and community engagement. According to Alhaji Abdul-Hakeem A. Smith, the Chairman of the Anwaru-L-Huda League of Nigeria’s Garki branch, this sacred period serves as a powerful reminder that true worship must be accompanied by compassion. He emphasized that spirituality without a sense of social responsibility is ultimately empty.
During the organization’s annual Ramadan lecture, Smith highlighted the current challenges faced by both the country and the global community. These include economic pressures, moral decline, leadership deficits, social inequality, and increasing hardship among vulnerable populations. He pointed out that many families are struggling to survive on a daily basis, with poverty, unemployment, and social dislocation testing the resilience of the people.
Smith added that Islam places a strong emphasis on social justice, particularly during Ramadan. He mentioned the importance of practices such as Zakat (obligatory charity) and Sadaqah (voluntary charity), which encourage Muslims to support one another and fulfill their collective responsibilities. This focus on giving and helping others is especially significant during this blessed month.
In addition to discussing the broader societal issues, Smith also shared updates on the achievements of the League’s leadership over the past year. One of the key projects currently underway is the construction of a community mosque and Imam’s quarters in Kubwa. A projected amount of N1.2 billion is being sought to complete this initiative, which has already reached 40 percent completion.
This project reflects the League’s commitment to strengthening the Muslim community through infrastructure development and religious education. By investing in such facilities, the organization aims to provide a space for worship, learning, and community gatherings, fostering a stronger sense of unity and purpose.
Professor Olaofe Musa Adeyemi, the Chief Missioner of the Ansar-U-Deen Society of Nigeria in Abuja, delivered a compelling message during the event. He urged Muslims not to be passive consumers of religion but instead to become active participants in building a society where every citizen can live with dignity, regardless of their background or beliefs.
Adeyemi’s speech aligned with the theme of the annual event, which was titled ‘The Prophetic Model of Nation Building: Economic and Social Justice.’ This theme encouraged participants to reflect on the teachings of the Holy Quran and the values embedded in the holy month of Ramadan.
The event provided a platform for attendees to engage with the teachings of the Quran and explore how these lessons can be applied in their daily lives. It also served as an opportunity to emphasize the importance of economic and social justice, which are central to Islamic principles.
By focusing on these themes, the organizers aimed to inspire individuals to take action in their communities, promoting fairness, equality, and mutual support. This aligns with the broader goal of using Ramadan as a time to strengthen both personal faith and collective responsibility.
As the holy month of Ramadan continues, it is essential for Muslims to remember the core values of compassion, justice, and social responsibility. The messages shared during the annual lecture highlight the need for active participation in faith and the importance of working together to address the challenges facing society today. Through acts of charity, community development, and spiritual reflection, Muslims can contribute to a more just and equitable world.
