Community Protests Against Rising Violence in Ondo State

Residents of the Ayede Ogbese community in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State took to the streets on Tuesday to protest a surge in violence and crime in the region. The demonstration involved blocking the busy Akure-Owo-Benin highway, a major transportation route, as locals demanded action from authorities to address the growing insecurity.

The protests were triggered by the murder of a young man named Ben Daniels, who was killed on Monday night. According to reports, Daniels was attacked while riding a motorcycle with his friend James Unekwu along Agunla Farm Road. While Unekwu managed to escape, Daniels’ body was later discovered by the roadside, sparking outrage among the local population.

This incident has brought renewed attention to the alarming rise in violent crimes across Ondo State. In recent months, the state has experienced an increase in kidnappings, abductions, and other forms of criminal activity that have left many residents fearful for their safety.

On February 18, a tragic event occurred when gunmen killed the traditional ruler of Agamo community in Akure North LGA, Kehinde Jacob Faledon. Just days later, suspected kidnappers abducted a couple in the Ilu-Abo community within the same local government area. These events have further fueled public anger and frustration, leading to calls for stronger security measures.

During Tuesday’s protest, youths set up barricades on the highway, causing significant disruptions to traffic. They accused the state government of neglecting the needs of the people and failing to protect them from criminal elements. The protesters demanded immediate action to restore peace and security in the area.

In response to the growing concerns, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa directed security agencies to intensify operations against kidnappers and other criminals. In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Idowu Ajanaku, the governor emphasized that investigations into recent crimes have revealed possible collaboration between perpetrators and local residents. He assured the public that security measures had been strengthened to prevent further incidents.

The Ondo State Police Command also confirmed the attack that led to Ben Daniels’ death. Through its spokesperson, Jimoh Abayomi, the police department reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of citizens and bringing those responsible for such crimes to justice.

The situation in Ondo State highlights the urgent need for coordinated efforts between law enforcement, local leaders, and the community to tackle the root causes of violence and insecurity. As the protests continue, it remains to be seen how effectively the government will respond to the demands of the people and whether meaningful changes can be implemented to restore order and safety in the region.
