A youth leader from Odo-Eri, Juwon Ajisafe, was tragically killed in the Bareke area of Egbe, Yagba West Local Government Area, after being targeted by suspected bandits. The incident occurred around 8 pm on Tuesday when armed individuals stormed the community and began firing randomly.
According to reports, the victim was on his way to visit a friend in the area when the attack took place. Funmilayo, a local resident, shared details of the event: “Juwon Ajisafe was a victim of circumstance; he was just taking a leisurely walk on Tuesday night when, unfortunately, he ran into the hoodlums’ operation.” She added that he was shot during the encounter and later confirmed dead at a hospital in Egbe.
In reaction to the incident, the youth of Egbe took to the streets early on Wednesday morning, blocking the federal highway that runs through the town. Their goal was to draw attention to their concerns and demand action from the authorities. However, the protest did not last long as community leaders and elders managed to convince the youth to temporarily halt their actions.
A concerned citizen, Aremu E. Tayo, highlighted the escalating tension in the region. He stated that Yagba West has experienced a troubling increase in attacks over the past 48 hours. According to Tayo, “Within just 48 hours, Yagba West has come under relentless attack.” He mentioned several incidents, including the burning of a cashew-laden vehicle along the Egbe-Eruku Road, the shooting and abduction of Mr. Elijah Toba Inakoju near the Lawiri River in Odo-Ere, and the alleged kidnapping of three farmers along the Egbe-Okunran Road.
In response to the surge in violence, the Chairman of Yagba West LGA, Tosin Olokun, has implemented stricter curfew regulations. The new measures aim to curb further unrest and ensure the safety of residents.
In a statement released by the chairman’s Chief Press Secretary, Adeyemi Babarinde Sunday, it was announced that the curfew will now be enforced from 7 pm to 6 am daily across all communities within the local government area. This decision reflects the growing concern over security and the need for immediate action to protect the people of Yagba West.
The events in Yagba West have raised serious questions about the effectiveness of current security measures and the need for stronger intervention. Residents are calling for increased police presence, better surveillance, and more community engagement to prevent future attacks.
Local leaders and stakeholders are also urging the government to address the root causes of the violence, including poverty, unemployment, and lack of access to education. These factors often contribute to the rise of criminal activities in the region.
As the situation continues to unfold, the community remains on high alert. The tragic loss of Juwon Ajisafe serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by residents in Yagba West. It is hoped that the new curfew and other initiatives will bring a sense of stability and safety back to the area.
