Governor Hyacinth Alia has reported a significant improvement in the security situation across Benue State. On Thursday, he stated that only three out of the state’s 23 local government areas are currently experiencing minimal security threats. This marks a positive shift from the previous situation, where around 17 local government areas were severely affected by insecurity.
The governor made these remarks during a courtesy visit by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, at the Government House in Makurdi. The meeting highlighted the ongoing collaboration between the state government and security agencies to address the challenges posed by insecurity.
A statement released by the Government House Information Officer, Kehe Hon, quoted the governor as emphasizing the progress made since his administration took office on May 29, 2023. He noted that the sustained partnership between the state government and security agencies has led to a dramatic improvement in the security environment.
“Out of the 23 local government areas in Benue State, about 17 were under serious security threat when we came in. Today, only three are experiencing minimal threats, and even in those areas, there is relative peace,” Alia said.
The governor expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Army and the Federal Government for their support in combating insecurity within the state. He acknowledged that the close coordination between the military and the state government has played a crucial role in achieving the current level of security.
Alia also called on residents to actively support security agencies by providing credible information. He stressed the importance of communities viewing uniformed personnel as partners in the effort to protect lives and property.
While the current situation in Benue State is more stable than it was a year ago, the governor emphasized the need for continued vigilance and cooperation. He reiterated that the success of security initiatives depends not only on the efforts of the government and military but also on the active participation of the community.
Alia’s comments reflect a broader strategy aimed at ensuring long-term stability and development in the state. By fostering a sense of shared responsibility, the administration hopes to create an environment where citizens feel safe and secure.
Looking ahead, the governor is likely to focus on maintaining the gains made so far while addressing any emerging challenges. His administration will continue to work closely with federal and state security agencies to ensure that the improvements in security are sustained and further enhanced.
The positive developments in Benue State serve as a model for other regions facing similar security issues. By prioritizing collaboration, transparency, and community engagement, the state is taking meaningful steps toward a safer future.
