Obi: How Many More Lives Before Action?

Condemnation of Terrorist Attack in Borno State

Former Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has strongly condemned the recent attack by terrorists in Borno State. He described the incident as horrific and unacceptable, highlighting the deep concern over the ongoing violence in the region.

According to reports, suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists abducted more than 100 women and children in an attack on the Ngoshe community in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State. The terrorists also killed the chief imam of the town, some community elders, and soldiers during the assault, which took place shortly after Muslims broke their fast on Wednesday.

Local and security sources revealed that the terrorists first attacked a military base belonging to the 82 Division Task Force Battalion before invading the community and an Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp. This coordinated attack left many families in despair and highlighted the persistent threat posed by extremist groups in the region.

In response to the incident, Obi expressed his deep sorrow and frustration on his X handle. He described the tragedy as exposing a “painful reality” that many Nigerians are forced to endure. His comments reflected a growing sense of urgency among citizens who are tired of witnessing the loss of lives and the lack of effective action from authorities.

Obi questioned how many more lives must be lost before decisive measures are taken to secure communities and protect citizens. He emphasized the need for immediate action to dismantle the structures of these insurgents and ensure the safety of vulnerable populations.

A Call for Leadership and Action

Obi, who previously served as the governor of Anambra State, criticized politicians for remaining indifferent to the suffering of the people while terrorists continue to unleash attacks in various communities. He pointed out that political leaders are often preoccupied with their own interests rather than focusing on the well-being of the citizens.

He stated that while Nigerians are slaughtered daily by terrorists, the most troubling aspect is the focus of political leaders on selfish schemes related to the next election cycle. This, he argued, keeps the population in a state of insecurity, poverty, and underdevelopment.

Despite the grim situation, Obi expressed sympathy for the families who lost their loved ones in the attack and the communities displaced by the violence. He warned that Nigerians cannot accept inaction in the face of such tragedies.

A Shared Grief and Resolve

To the families who have lost loved ones, to the children now displaced, and to the communities living in fear, Obi stood with them in grief and resolve. He emphasized that their pain is Nigeria’s pain and that the safety and dignity of all citizens must be the priority of any government claiming to serve the people.

Obi called for a leadership that values human life above all else. He asserted that Nigeria is stronger than the terror that threatens it but stressed that silence and inaction are not options.

“We must act now, for today’s victims, for tomorrow’s children, and for the Nigeria we all deserve,” he concluded.
