Iran has reaffirmed its commitment to the safety of Nigerian citizens living within its borders, despite the growing tensions in the Middle East following the ongoing military standoff between the United States, Israel, and Iran. This assurance was made by Ambassador Mahdavi Raja, Iran’s representative to Nigeria, during a press conference held in Abuja on Thursday.
Raja emphasized that there have been no reports of harm to Nigerians residing in Iranian cities such as Tehran and Qom since the outbreak of hostilities. He highlighted that Iran’s actions have been strictly defensive, aimed at safeguarding its territory and population in line with international law.
“The safety of foreign residents, including Nigerians, is a priority for the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Raja stated. “Our defensive measures are focused solely on military targets and do not pose any threat to civilians or foreign nationals.”
The ambassador stressed that Iran remains dedicated to maintaining diplomatic relations and engaging in dialogue, even amid the current conflict. He pointed out that the country’s response to the situation has been guided by international law, particularly the principles of self-defense outlined in Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.
Raja also mentioned that the recent escalation occurred during a time of significant cultural and religious importance in Iran, including the holy month of Ramadan and the Iranian New Year, Nowruz. Despite these challenging circumstances, he assured that the security and well-being of foreign residents have not been affected.
He further highlighted the longstanding diplomatic and economic ties between Iran and Nigeria, emphasizing that cooperation would continue in key areas such as energy, agriculture, education, and trade. These partnerships remain vital to both nations, even amid regional instability.
Raja urged Nigerians living abroad to remain calm and follow official guidance, reiterating that there is no immediate threat to their safety. He also called on the international community to support peace and stability in the region while recognizing Iran’s right to defend its people and territory.
The Nigerian government has been closely monitoring developments and has issued travel advisories for citizens in Iran and neighboring Gulf countries. The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has also been coordinating with relevant authorities to provide information and support to Nigerian citizens in the region.
As tensions continue to evolve, the communication between Iran and Nigeria remains an important channel for ensuring the safety of all parties involved. The ambassador’s statements reflect a broader effort to maintain trust and transparency between the two nations, even in times of conflict.
With the situation still unfolding, it is crucial for all stakeholders to remain informed and vigilant. The assurances from Iran, coupled with the proactive measures taken by Nigerian authorities, aim to provide clarity and reassurance to those affected by the ongoing developments in the region.
