Mixed Reactions Follow APC State Conferences

Mixed Reactions to APC Congresses

The outcome of the All Progressives Congress (APC) congresses held across various states has sparked a range of reactions. While many candidates were selected through consensus arrangements, there are ongoing grievances regarding the conduct of these events in several regions.

In some states, parallel congresses have been reported, while others face allegations of candidate imposition. Conflicts between new and old members have also arisen in areas where governors recently switched allegiance to the party. Additionally, the influx of former opposition party members into the APC structure has raised concerns.

Ondo State: A Dramatic Turn

In Ondo State, the state chapter of the APC faced a crisis that took a dramatic turn despite a restraining order issued by the Federal High Court in Akure. The court had previously granted an interim injunction preventing the party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from conducting the congress until a legal challenge was resolved.

Despite this, the APC proceeded with its state congress at the International Centre for Culture and Events in Akure. Kolawole Babatunde, a former member of the House of Representatives, emerged as the new Chairman of the APC in Ondo State. Alongside 35 other members of the State Working Committee, Babatunde was elected through consensus and affirmation at the event.

Benue State: Uneasy Calm

In Benue State, the aftermath of the APC state congress has been marked by an uneasy calm. Two executives were elected, and although tensions initially arose, the atmosphere remained peaceful. Factions loyal to Governor Hyacinth Alia and those backed by Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, both maintained decorum.

James Ornguga, the State Organising Secretary of the Omale-led executive, stated that there were no factions within the APC in the state, emphasizing that the exercise was conducted under the supervision of the national secretariat’s committee. Similarly, Morgan Ihomun, the State Organising Secretary of the Agada-led executive, noted that the process remained peaceful and orderly, reflecting unity within the party.

Nasarawa State: Disappointment and Support

A member of the APC and chairman of the Counter and Mobilization Committee of former IGP Mohammed Adamu Abubakar’s campaign organization, Isa Nathaniel, expressed disappointment over the election of Aliyu Bello as the new state chairman. Nathaniel, from Nasarawa North Senatorial District, mentioned that the people of the zone were not pleased, expecting the chairmanship to go to their region.

However, Hassan Hamza, a prominent member of APC from Lafia, praised the election of Bello, stating it was the right decision for the party. He emphasized that the election, which included input from all stakeholders, was in the interest of the party and the state.

Kaduna: Allegations of Discrimination

In Kaduna, a former State Executive Committee (Exco) member of the APC expressed dissatisfaction over his removal, warning of possible challenges ahead of the party primaries. The former official, who prefers anonymity, stressed that due process was not followed during his removal.

Consensus vs. Democracy

Professor Kamilu Sani Fage, a political analyst and professor of Political Science at Bayero University Kano, criticized the use of consensus arrangements in selecting candidates for the APC congresses. He argued that such methods undermine democracy by silencing dissenting voices.

Fage pointed out that consensus can lead to powerful figures dominating the process, making it appear as if everyone agrees. He warned that reliance on consensus could erode internal party democracy and affect the credibility of future elections.

Legal Perspective

A Kano-based lawyer, Barrister Kamilu Ahmad-Paki, explained that political parties can adopt consensus or indirect primaries instead of direct primaries. However, he emphasized that this must be done under strict conditions outlined in Section 88 of the Electoral Act 2026 (as amended).

According to him, if these conditions are met, the APC’s adoption of consensus would stand legally without triggering disputes.

APC’s Response

APC national publicity secretary, Felix Muoka, acknowledged that disagreements are normal during such exercises. He stated in a TV interview that while no system is perfect, the party has delivered a largely peaceful and cohesive congress.

Kebbi State: Call for Calm

Following his absence and that of two other Senators from Kebbi North and South Senatorial Districts at the APC Congress, Senator Adamu Aliero called on his supporters in Kebbi Central to remain calm while the issue is resolved. He distributed 12,000 bags of rice to people of the 21 Local Government Areas of the state through one of his legislative aides.

Kano State: Return of Doguwa

In Kano, Umar Haruna Doguwa emerged as the Chairman of the Kano State chapter of the APC following a consensus arrangement. His return to the position marks a significant moment, as he previously served as state chairman a decade ago.

The congress took place at the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium in Kano.

Jigawa State: Peaceful Conduct

Governor of Jigawa State, Malam Umar Namadi, expressed satisfaction with the successful conduct of the APC congress in the state, describing the exercise as peaceful, orderly, and devoid of disputes.
