First Lady Melania Trump took center stage on Monday as she presided over a critical meeting of the United Nations Security Council, focusing on the impact of conflict on children and education. This event occurred against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the Middle East following ongoing military actions involving Iran. The session marked a historic moment, as it was the first time the spouse of a world leader had chaired a Security Council meeting.
During her address at UN headquarters in New York, Trump emphasized the crucial role of education in promoting tolerance and world peace. She underscored the necessity of protecting children who find themselves in the crosshairs of conflict zones. Her remarks were particularly poignant given the current global situation, where the safety and well-being of children remain a pressing concern.
Trump’s leadership at the meeting was on behalf of the United States, which recently assumed the rotating presidency of the Security Council. This opportunity allowed her to highlight the importance of safeguarding children’s rights and access to education, especially in regions affected by war and instability.
In addition to her focus on education, Trump extended her condolences to the families of U.S. service members who have lost their lives in recent operations. While she did not specify any particular military action, her words resonated with the gravity of the situation. “Their bravery and dedication will always be remembered,” she said. “I extend my earnest wishes for a swift and smooth recovery to all those who have been injured. You are in my thoughts and prayers during these challenging times.”
As a prominent advocate for children’s welfare, Trump has consistently made this cause a central part of her public engagements. In her closing remarks, she expressed the United States’ solidarity with children worldwide, stating, “I hope soon peace will be yours.”
The decision for Trump to lead the meeting had been announced earlier in the month, signaling the U.S. commitment to addressing the challenges faced by children in conflict zones. During the session, UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo highlighted the disproportionate impact of conflicts on children. She noted that schools in several Middle Eastern countries, including Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman, had either closed or transitioned to remote learning due to the regional security situation.
DiCarlo also mentioned reports from Iran regarding an elementary school being struck during recent strikes. Iranian authorities claim that an airstrike hit an elementary school in the town of Minab on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of 153 people. They have accused the United States and Israel of being responsible for the attack.
Prior to the meeting, Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, criticized the U.S. for convening a high-level discussion on child protection on the very day it assumed the Security Council presidency. He described the move as “deeply shameful and hypocritical.”
In response to the incident, the U.S. Central Command stated that it was investigating the reports of the attack, while Israel’s military indicated that it was not aware of any operations in the area. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated the administration’s stance, stating that “the United States will not deliberately target a school.”
