The Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN) has made a significant move by appointing Chief Dr Ogwu Onoja as Patron and Ambassador of the All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) 2026. This decision is aimed at enhancing preparations for the continental women’s golf championship, which is set to take place in Nigeria. The appointment reflects LGAN’s commitment to delivering a successful and globally recognized tournament while fostering the growth of women’s golf across Africa.
Onoja, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and the Agenyi-Attah of the Igala Kingdom, was honored with a plaque by LGAN in recognition of his long-standing contributions to sports development and his unwavering support for women’s golf in Nigeria and Africa. His involvement is expected to bring added value to the championship and boost confidence among stakeholders.
During the presentation of the appointment letter in Abuja, LGAN President Lami Ahmed highlighted Onoja’s leadership credentials, influence, and passion for advancing sports. She emphasized that his role would be crucial in providing strategic guidance, promoting the ideals of the championship, and mobilizing national support aligned with the Renewed Hope sports agenda of President Bola Tinubu.
Ahmed also announced that the 2026 edition of the All Africa Challenge Trophy will be held from November 1 to November 7 at the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja. She noted that the event is anticipated to attract female golfers from over 40 African countries, marking a significant step in showcasing Nigeria’s capabilities in organizing major sporting events.
She recalled that Nigeria previously hosted the championship in 1996 and 2010, adding that the 2026 edition would further highlight the country’s organizational capacity and growing influence in African sports. The event is expected to serve as a platform for promoting excellence and unity through the sport of golf.
In his response, Onoja expressed his belief in the power of sports as a tool for unity and social cohesion. He emphasized the importance of investing more in women’s sports, noting that female athletes competing at the continental level exemplify excellence, resilience, and national pride. Onoja commended LGAN for its dedication to developing women’s golf and pledged his full support for the success of the 2026 championship.
He also mentioned that hosting Africa again would provide Nigeria with an opportunity to showcase its organizational strength and renowned hospitality. The event is expected to leave a lasting legacy and inspire future generations of female golfers across the continent.
