Yang Hyo-jin, 37, who dedicated 19 years of her professional career to Hyundai Engineering & Construction in the women’s V-League, said a heartfelt goodbye to her home fans in Suwon. The team organized a special retirement ceremony for Yang during the final home game of the regular season against Pepper Savings Bank, which ended in a 1-3 loss at Suwon Gymnasium on the 8th. Yang, who made her professional debut in 2007 and remained with Hyundai Engineering & Construction throughout her career, will retire after this season.
Yang is widely regarded as a “legendary” middle blocker, holding the all-time records for most points (8,392) and most blocks (1,744) in the V-League, which includes both men’s and women’s divisions. Her achievements have earned her recognition as a V-League All-Star a record 17 times. Under her leadership, Hyundai Engineering & Construction secured three league titles in 2011, 2016, and 2024.
In addition to her club success, Yang was a key member of the national team. She played a crucial role in helping South Korea reach the semifinals at the 2012 London and 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The retirement ceremony was attended by Yang’s family, teammates, and even former national teammate Kim Yeon-koung, who has since retired. The event was a touching celebration of Yang’s contributions to the sport and the team. As a tribute to her legacy, Hyundai Engineering & Construction officially retired her jersey number 14, ensuring it will never be worn by another player.
Yang’s career is a testament to dedication, perseverance, and excellence. Over the years, she became a symbol of inspiration for young athletes and a beloved figure among fans. Her ability to consistently perform at the highest level and lead her team to victory made her one of the most respected players in the V-League.
Her journey from a rookie in 2007 to a veteran with multiple championships under her belt highlights the importance of hard work and passion. Yang’s impact on the sport extends beyond the numbers; it lies in the memories she created and the standards she set for future generations.
As Yang prepares for life after volleyball, she leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered for years to come. Her retirement marks the end of an era for Hyundai Engineering & Construction and the V-League. However, her influence will continue to inspire players and fans alike.
