African Democratic Congress Pledges 40% Women Representation in Party Structures
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has made a significant commitment to gender inclusion by reserving 40 per cent of all party positions for women across every level of its structure. This move underscores the party’s dedication to ensuring that women play a central role in political leadership and decision-making.
This pledge was highlighted in a statement issued by the ADC’s National Publicivity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, during an event held in Abuja on Sunday to mark International Women’s Day. The statement emphasized the party’s belief in the critical role women play in nation-building and their contributions to society.
Abdullahi stated that the ADC recognizes women as essential partners in building a stronger Nigeria. He pointed out that women bear significant responsibilities within their homes, communities, and workplaces. “Any political movement genuinely committed to national progress must recognize, empower, and harness the strength, resilience, and leadership potential of women,” he said.
The party’s National Working Committee is designed to reflect this commitment, ensuring that women are not sidelined in political processes. “We are the only political party in Nigeria whose constitution reserves 40 per cent of all party positions, at every level, for women,” Abdullahi noted.
He reiterated the ADC’s resolve to bring women from the margins to the center of leadership. According to Abdullahi, Nigerian women shoulder a disproportionate share of the country’s social and economic responsibilities but remain underrepresented in key national institutions. “Empowering women politically and economically remains essential to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring inclusive governance for sustainable national development,” he added.
As Nigeria joins the global community in celebrating International Women’s Day, the ADC honors the contributions of all Nigerian women. From mothers raising families to entrepreneurs driving the economy and teachers shaping the future, women carry a heavy burden in sustaining the nation. However, they remain significantly underrepresented in positions of power.
Abdullahi stressed that the ADC is determined to change this narrative by fully integrating women into the party’s leadership structures. “In the ADC, women are leaders. They are part of the structures that guide the party and shape its decisions,” he said.
International Women’s Day, observed annually on March 8, serves as a reminder of the achievements of women and the ongoing need to advocate for gender equality. It is a day to celebrate the progress made and recommit to the goals of justice and equity for all women around the world.
