The Director General of the Michael Imodu Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS), located in Ilorin, Isa Aremu, has highlighted the critical role of strategic diplomacy in managing international tensions. He specifically pointed to the approach taken by President Bola Tinubu in dealing with allegations of genocide in parts of Nigeria from his United States counterpart, Donald Trump.
Aremu made these remarks during his opening address at the institute’s 5th Ramadan lecture series, titled ‘The Role of Muslims in Supporting the Bereaved.’ The event was organized by the Muslim community within the institute and aimed to foster dialogue on important social and political issues.
According to Aremu, President Tinubu chose a quiet but firm diplomatic approach rather than engaging in public exchanges or trade insults. This method helped to de-escalate tensions that could have otherwise led to more serious consequences.
‘President Tinubu kept calm and worked behind the scenes to dissuade him,’ Aremu stated. He emphasized that instead of responding with confrontation, the president used diplomacy to prevent any potential attacks on Nigeria over what he described as an “imaginary and non-existent genocide.”
This approach, according to Aremu, prevented a situation that could have escalated into a much more dangerous conflict. He warned that a confrontational response could have led to grave consequences.
‘If President Tinubu had not deployed diplomacy in that case, perhaps we would have been going after one another. We might by now be killing ourselves,’ he said.
Aremu also addressed the broader issue of conflict resolution, urging Nigerians to maintain hope despite the security challenges facing parts of the country. He stressed the importance of dialogue and peaceful engagement in addressing both local and international conflicts.
His message resonated with the audience, many of whom are involved in community and labor initiatives. Aremu’s insights provided a framework for understanding how diplomacy can play a crucial role in maintaining stability and preventing unnecessary conflict.
He encouraged all citizens to support efforts that promote peace and understanding, especially in times of crisis. His speech served as a reminder that while challenges may arise, the path forward lies in cooperation and mutual respect.
The discussion also touched on historical examples where diplomatic efforts have successfully resolved tense situations. Aremu referenced past instances where leaders have chosen dialogue over confrontation, leading to long-term peace and stability.
He noted that such approaches not only prevent immediate conflicts but also build trust between nations. This is particularly relevant in today’s global landscape, where misinformation and misunderstandings can quickly escalate into full-blown crises.
By highlighting the importance of strategic diplomacy, Aremu reinforced the idea that effective leadership involves more than just making bold statements. It requires careful consideration, patience, and a commitment to peaceful resolution.
In conclusion, the role of strategic diplomacy cannot be overstated. As demonstrated by President Tinubu’s actions, a measured and thoughtful approach can prevent unnecessary conflict and promote stability. Aremu’s speech serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of dialogue, cooperation, and peaceful engagement in addressing both local and international challenges.
