Federal Government Launches N48 Billion Initiative to Revamp Engineering Education in Nigerian Universities

The Nigerian federal government has approved a significant financial injection of N48 billion aimed at revitalizing engineering infrastructure and equipping 12 federal and state universities across the country with modern, industry-relevant tools. This initiative is set to be executed through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and is part of a strategic effort to enhance practical training within the nation’s higher education system.

The funding will focus on rehabilitating aging engineering workshops and acquiring advanced equipment that aligns with current industrial standards. This move is designed to ensure that students receive hands-on training that prepares them for real-world engineering challenges.

During the inauguration of the Implementation Committee for TETFund’s Special High-Impact Intervention Projects in Abuja, Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced the approval of this project. He emphasized that the initiative specifically targets engineering and technology faculties in federal universities of technology as well as selected conventional universities.

• Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State
• University of Ilesha, Osun State

Alausa highlighted that the N48 billion allocation is separate from other TETFund interventions. He noted that an additional N20 billion has already been allocated in the 2026 spending guidelines to upgrade engineering workshops in other universities nationwide.

A National Investment in Engineering Education

Describing the initiative as a national investment, Alausa stated that the goal is to produce globally competitive engineers, innovators, and industrial leaders. He also emphasized the importance of restoring confidence in Nigeria’s engineering education ecosystem by providing students with the tools and environments necessary for success.

He added that the funds would be used to either upgrade existing facilities or construct new workshops where there are gaps in infrastructure. This approach ensures that all participating universities can offer high-quality, practical training that meets industry expectations.

Ensuring Accountability and Measurable Outcomes

Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmad, stressed the importance of accountability and monitoring in determining the project’s success. She warned that while funding is essential, it alone would not guarantee results. Effective implementation and oversight are crucial to achieving the intended impact.

TETFund Executive Secretary Sonny Echono described the intervention as part of broader reforms aimed at repositioning tertiary institutions in Nigeria. He emphasized the need for systemic improvements that align with global educational standards.

Committee chairman and president of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Ali Rabiu, pledged strict oversight to ensure value for money and measurable outcomes. His commitment reflects the collective responsibility of stakeholders in making this initiative a success.
