The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has initiated an investigation into allegations of illegal car racing and stunt driving reportedly carried out by some youths near the National Mosque area in Abuja. This development comes after several complaints from members of the public, who have raised concerns about the unsafe nature of these activities.
According to the FRSC’s Public Education Officer (CPEO), Olusegun Ogungbemide, the agency received multiple reports from residents regarding the incidents. These accounts, however, were not always consistent or detailed. Despite this, the FRSC took the matter seriously and decided to launch an official inquiry.
Ogungbemide confirmed that the FRSC had indeed become aware of such activities, which he described as “illegal or quasi-illegal.” He emphasized that the agency is committed to ensuring road safety and preventing any actions that could endanger other road users.
As part of its response, the FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, directed the FRSC Sector Commander in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Felix Theman, to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations. The goal is to gather accurate information and submit a report for further action.
Ogungbemide explained that the complaints mainly came from concerned residents who observed unusual racing activities in the area. He noted that while the details of the incidents varied, the overall concern was clear.
The FRSC spokesperson highlighted that any form of Formula One-style racing or similar high-speed activities on public roads is strictly prohibited in Nigeria. He stated that such actions are not only against the law but also pose a significant risk to other drivers, pedestrians, and property.
“Legally, we do not have Formula One running as a regular sport on Nigerian roads, so if such is happening, then it will be compromising the safety of other road users,” Ogungbemide said. He added that the FRSC has not granted permission to any organization or group to conduct car racing or stunt driving on public roads within the territory.
Ogungbemide assured the public that once the investigation is complete, the FRSC will take appropriate action in accordance with existing traffic laws and safety regulations. This includes measures aimed at safeguarding all road users and preventing future incidents.
He reiterated the importance of responsible behavior on the roads and urged citizens to report any suspicious activities to the authorities. The FRSC remains vigilant in its mission to ensure that Nigerian roads are safe for everyone.
The ongoing investigation by the FRSC underscores the agency’s commitment to maintaining order and safety on the roads. As the situation unfolds, the public can expect updates from the FRSC regarding the findings and any subsequent actions taken. Until then, residents are encouraged to remain cautious and report any illegal activities they witness.
