Five individuals have been taken into custody following an incident that occurred outside a pub in Llandudno, Conwy county, after a Welsh Cup semi-final match. The event took place on Saturday, following a 5-1 victory by Flint Town United over Bangor in the semi-final at Go Goodwins Stadium.
North Wales Police confirmed that the arrests were made on suspicion of public order offenses, actual bodily harm (ABH), and assaulting an emergency worker. The incident unfolded outside the Nevill public house, with reports indicating a significant amount of disorder involving a large number of people just before 16:00 GMT.
The club involved, CPD Bangor City 1876, issued a statement acknowledging the incident and mentioning that it was aware of footage shared on social media involving the club chairman. The statement said, “We understand the matter is currently subject to ongoing action by North Wales Police, therefore, at this time, the club is unable to comment further.”
The club added that it has established policies and procedures to address any issues raised and will follow those processes if necessary. North Wales Police emphasized that the incident remains a live investigation, with officers reviewing video footage and CCTV. They also encouraged anyone who recorded the disorder to share the footage with them to assist in their ongoing inquiries.
The police force highlighted the widespread sharing of recorded footage on social media, which has drawn considerable public attention. They urged individuals who captured the incident to send their videos to the authorities. This step is crucial for gathering evidence and understanding the events that transpired during the chaotic scene.
Flint Town United is set to face the winner of Sunday’s semi-final between Rhyl 1879 and Caernarfon Town at Colwyn Bay. The final will be held at Rodney Parade in Newport in April, marking the culmination of the Welsh Cup competition.
The incident has sparked discussions within the local community about the behavior of fans following football matches. While the focus is on the legal actions being taken by the police, there is also concern about ensuring such incidents do not recur in the future.
Local officials and community leaders are expected to address these concerns, emphasizing the need for responsible fan behavior and cooperation with law enforcement. The situation underscores the importance of maintaining public order and safety, especially during high-profile sporting events.
