In January 2021, the leadership of Lagos State University (LASU) was in transition as the tenure of its then Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lanre Fagbohun, came to an end. A new leader needed to be selected through a rigorous process involving a joint Selection Committee formed by the university’s Senate and Council. This committee interviewed candidates for the position of Vice Chancellor and submitted the names of three top contenders to the Lagos State Governor for final approval.

The advertisement for the VC position outlined specific qualifications, including at least 10 years of experience as a Professor, a strong academic record, and proven leadership in university administration. More than 18 professors from various universities across Nigeria and beyond applied for the role. Among them were three standout candidates: Prof Olumuyiwa Odusanya (Public Health), Prof Senapon Bakre (Microbiology), and Prof Kabiru Akinyemi (Microbiology).

However, a controversy soon emerged, centered on one of the shortlisted candidates who held a Fellowship of the Nigerian Postgraduate Medical College (NPMCN) instead of a PhD. Critics argued that this made him ineligible for the VC position, sparking a broader debate about the value of different academic credentials.

The Controversy Over Qualifications

The controversy escalated when an outdated circular from the National Universities Commission (NUC) resurfaced, falsely claiming that the Fellowship was inferior to a PhD in terms of academic standing. This led to the unfair labeling of the candidate as a “pseudo-academic” and the dismissal of the Fellowship as a second-tier qualification.

This sparked a wave of questions among medical professionals in Nigeria. What is the future of the residency program? Is it considered equivalent to a PhD? And what path should doctors take for career progression?

   Absolutely not. Fellowships in medicine are clinical, professional certifications that qualify individuals to practice as consultant specialists. In contrast, a PhD is a research-focused academic doctorate. While fellowships emphasize clinical expertise, PhDs are essential for advanced theoretical research and university teaching.

2. What qualifications are required for medical doctors to teach in universities?
   
   The answer lies in practical experience. For example, a professor who has spent years mastering surgery can provide invaluable hands-on training to medical students. Their expertise in treating patients is crucial for teaching, even if they lack a PhD.

3. What qualifications are needed for career progression?
   
   Simply put, anyone can advance in their career. The debate arose because a doctor dared to seek a leadership role, prompting critics to question why doctors would want to become VCs. But the reality is that doctors want equal opportunities to lead, just like other qualified individuals.

Understanding the Differences

Fellowships require years of residency training, often lasting 4–7 years depending on the specialty. Some doctors spend up to 10 years completing their training, with repeated attempts at exams. The exams are notoriously difficult, ensuring that only the most skilled and dedicated professionals earn the title of specialist.

In contrast, a PhD focuses on research rather than clinical practice. It equips individuals with the skills to conduct independent investigations but does not necessarily prepare them to treat patients. As someone who has completed both a fellowship and is currently pursuing a PhD, I can confirm that the two are fundamentally different. The research in a fellowship is more practical, while a PhD emphasizes theoretical exploration.

The Role of Clinical Expertise in Education

Medical education requires both clinical and academic expertise. A doctor with a fellowship can treat patients effectively, while a PhD holder may contribute to groundbreaking research. However, when it comes to teaching medical students, clinical experience is invaluable. A surgeon who can perform life-saving procedures brings real-world knowledge to the classroom.

Leadership and Career Opportunities

The debate over qualifications for university leadership is misguided. The role of a Vice Chancellor does not demand clinical or research expertise; it requires strong leadership, critical thinking, and administrative skills. Doctors have the right to compete for these positions, just like any other qualified individual.
