In recent years, a growing number of police and civilian staff have been caught engaging in a deceptive practice known as “key jamming.” This involves faking keyboard activity while working from home to create the illusion of productivity. Over the past three years, more than 50 individuals have either been sacked or ordered to resign due to this misconduct.
The method used by these employees is surprisingly simple. Some press the same keys repeatedly, while others use objects like staplers or drink cans to weigh down their keyboards. These actions are intended to give the impression that they are actively working, even when they are not. The discovery of such behavior has been made possible through the use of “keystroke software,” which can detect unusual patterns of keyboard activity.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has been one of the most affected forces, identifying 28 members of staff who had engaged in key jamming after an investigation by anti-corruption officers. Four individuals have already been dismissed, and two have resigned. In response, Chief Constable Stephen Watson has banned remote work for some staff as the investigation continues.
An insider revealed to The Times, which uncovered the extent of the issue through Freedom of Information requests and public records checks, that some employees were using the space bar with weights to simulate work while actually spending their time at the gym.
Liam Reakes, a police constable from Avon and Somerset, resigned before a misconduct panel could review his case. He was found to have pushed on the ‘Z’ key with an object for a total of 103 hours between June and September 2024. Similarly, Ryan Lenton, a member of Kent’s investigation management team, used the scam for 60 hours during 14 shifts in April and May of the previous year. His motivation was to visit the gym and golf course.
The problem of key jamming has not been confined to Greater Manchester. It has occurred across 14 police forces in the UK. However, the Metropolitan Police, the largest force in the country, has stated that it cannot provide data without exceeding the costs allowed for Freedom of Information requests. This suggests that the issue may be even more widespread than currently reported.
With the rise of remote and hybrid work models, the challenge of monitoring employee productivity has become increasingly complex. In December 2025, 49% of British workers, or around 22.7 million people, were working from home. Of these, 14% worked fully remotely, while 35% followed a hybrid model.
This trend highlights the need for more robust measures to ensure that remote work does not become a loophole for unethical behavior. As technology evolves, so too must the methods used to monitor and maintain accountability in the workplace.
The cases of key jamming among UK police forces serve as a cautionary tale about the challenges of remote work. While flexibility and convenience are important, they must be balanced with integrity and accountability. As more employees adopt remote or hybrid roles, organizations must find effective ways to ensure that productivity is not compromised by dishonest practices.
