South Korea Advances Delivery of Cheongung-II Missiles to UAE
South Korea has decided to deliver over 30 units of its domestically developed surface-to-air guided missile, the Cheongung-II, to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) earlier than planned. This decision was revealed on the 8th, following the UAE’s urgent request for expedited supply after the system demonstrated a high combat hit rate during ongoing Iranian airstrikes.
A UAE C-17 transport aircraft arrived at Daegu Airport that night, reportedly linked to the transfer of Cheongung-II guided missiles. A Cheongung-II battery consists of radar systems, a control center, launchers, and guided missiles. A government official stated on the same day, “Following an urgent request from the UAE, we have decided to advance the delivery schedule for part of the Cheongung-II guided missile quantity.” The additional guided missiles to be supplied in the first batch are said to be over 30 units.
Dubbed the “Korean version of the Patriot,” Cheongung-II is a medium-range, medium-altitude surface-to-air weapon designed to detect enemy aircraft or missiles, launch guided missiles, and shoot them down. Its price is approximately one-third that of the Patriot missile defense system, making it a cost-effective alternative.
The UAE signed a contract in 2022 with domestic defense companies, including LIG Nex1, Hanwha System, and Hanwha Aerospace, to introduce 10 Cheongung-II batteries. Currently, two batteries are deployed and operational. The two deployed batteries reportedly achieved a 96% interception success rate during recent large-scale airstrikes from Iran. With the combat effectiveness proven, the UAE recently requested the South Korean government to supply Cheongung-II batteries earlier than the contract date.
In response, when South Korea conveyed its stance that early supply was difficult due to existing commitments to countries like Saudi Arabia that have signed Cheongung-II contracts, the UAE requested at least the guided missiles be provided first, leading to this early delivery.
