Attack on Military Base and IDP Camp in Borno State

A recent attack on a military base and an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Ngoshe town, located in the Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, has left a trail of destruction and loss of life. The incident is believed to have been carried out by suspected terrorists, who targeted both military personnel and civilians.

According to local and security sources, the attack occurred after Muslims in the area broke their fast on Wednesday. A large group of armed militants invaded the town, leading to widespread chaos and fear among the residents. The attackers reportedly stormed a military base belonging to the 82 Division TF Battalion, launching a coordinated assault on the IDP camp as well.

Escalation of Violence

The security source revealed that the militants managed to overpower the troops stationed at the base. They then pursued those fleeing the area, ransacking the community and surrounding bushes. While the exact number of casualties remains unknown, nine bodies of soldiers have been recovered so far. However, it is likely that the death toll is higher, with many more civilians possibly affected.

In addition to the loss of life, the terrorists were reported to have set fire to armored tanks and military vehicles, looting unquantifiable amounts of ammunition. This indicates a well-organized and strategic attack, suggesting that the perpetrators had prior knowledge of the area’s defenses.

Abductions and Destruction

Local sources also mentioned that the terrorists entered the Ngoshe community, where they killed the Chief Imam and abducted over 100 women and children. This act of violence has sent shockwaves through the region, especially considering the fragile state of the community.

Residents have fled Ngoshe town to the neighboring town of Pulka, seeking safety from the ongoing threat. The attack has been described as devastating, particularly because refugees who had recently returned from Cameroon are now once again displaced.

One of the sources suggested that informers may have played a role in the coordinated attack. “It’s not possible to carry out such an attack without information from within us,” the source said. The mention of the Chief Imam being slaughtered and the abduction of numerous individuals highlights the severity of the situation.

Senator Ali Ndume, representing the APC in Borno South, confirmed the deaths of soldiers and civilians caused by the terrorists. He called for a serious military operation in the Sambisa Forests and the Mandara Mountains, areas known to be frequented by insurgents.

Ndume explained that the insurgents were not comfortable with the government’s resettlement plan in the region, which is why they set fire to many houses and businesses in the town. This suggests that the attack was not only a violent act but also a response to broader political and social tensions in the area.
