Governor Bala Mohammed Grants Executive Pardons to 73 Inmates in Bauchi State
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has made a significant move by granting executive pardons to 73 inmates across various custodial centers in the state. The governor described this decision as a constitutional duty, guided by principles of compassion, justice, and fairness, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan.
During an address at the Government House in Bauchi, the governor emphasized that the clemency was exercised under Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution. This action followed recommendations from the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy after a thorough review process. The governor highlighted that the selection of beneficiaries was based on several factors, including their age, health conditions, length of sentence served, minor offenses, and demonstrated remorse. Notably, those convicted of capital offenses were excluded from the list.
Mohammed further stated that the gesture coincided with the Ramadan season, emphasizing that mercy complements justice. He noted that this act of clemency provides deserving individuals with an opportunity for rehabilitation and reintegration into society. To support this effort, the governor approved N100,000 for each of the released inmates to aid their transition back into the community.
The Attorney General and Chairman of the Council for Prerogative of Mercy, Hassan Elyaqub SAN, provided additional details about the process. He revealed that 117 applications were reviewed before 73 inmates were found qualified for the governor’s approval.
