A violent attack on a police checkpoint in Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State has resulted in the death of two officers. The incident occurred at a checkpoint located along the Bakin Ruwa-Maje border road, where suspected bandits launched an unexpected assault.
According to reports, the attackers arrived in large numbers and stormed the checkpoint, opening fire on the officers stationed there. The violence was indiscriminate, with the assailants targeting the police personnel without hesitation. As a result, two officers were killed during the attack.
Following the shooting, the gunmen set fire to the tent that was being used by the officers at the checkpoint. This act of destruction further compounded the impact of the attack, leaving the site in ruins.
A local resident provided insight into the events, stating that the armed men overwhelmed the police officers before carrying out the attack and fleeing the scene. The residents expressed shock at the sudden and brutal nature of the assault.
The Kebbi State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, SP Bashir Usman. He stated that two officers were killed during the assault and that the checkpoint was also set ablaze. However, he assured the public that the police are handling the situation effectively.
“I will issue further details,” he added, indicating that more information would be released in the coming days.
This latest incident marks the third attack on security personnel along the Bakin Ruwa-Maje border corridor. In a previous attack in the same area, one police officer was reportedly killed. Additionally, a few months ago, five personnel from the Nigeria Customs Service and the Nigeria Immigration Service were killed in an attack along the Maje border road in Bagudo Local Government Area.
These repeated attacks highlight the growing security challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in the region. The frequency and intensity of such incidents have raised concerns among both officials and residents.
The situation underscores the need for increased security measures and coordinated efforts between different law enforcement agencies to prevent further attacks. It also calls for a deeper understanding of the motives and tactics of the armed groups operating in the area.
As investigations continue, authorities are likely to focus on identifying the perpetrators and strengthening security protocols to protect frontline workers. The community, meanwhile, remains on high alert, hoping for swift action to restore peace and stability in the region.
