The proposed transformation of Pusat Bandar Kajang into a heritage area and integrated arts hub has attracted significant public engagement, with 33 objections lodged during the recent consultation period for the Draft Special Area Plan. The feedback window, which ran from January 14th to February 13th, aimed to gather input on a vision for revitalising Kajang’s historic town centre as part of a broader Federal Government initiative for sustainable and systematic urban development.
The Housing and Local Government Ministry identified Kajang’s historic town centre as a key area for development, and the draft plan outlines a comprehensive strategy for its enhancement. A spokesperson for the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) confirmed that the objections received were specific to various elements within the proposed plan.
The objections raised by the public and stakeholders can be broadly categorised into several key areas:
Community and Art Hub Development: Ten objections specifically pertained to the proposed community hub and art hub slated for Jalan Changkat. This location, situated near the river corridor, appears to be a point of contention, suggesting concerns about its integration with the natural environment or its potential impact on the existing landscape.
Heritage Preservation and Streetscape: A significant portion of the feedback, eight objections, focused on building facades along Jalan Mendaling. This particular stretch is recognised as one of Kajang’s oldest commercial corridors and is valued for its historic character. The objections likely centre on ensuring that any proposed development respects and preserves the existing heritage architecture and the unique historical ambiance of Jalan Mendaling.
Traffic Management and Infrastructure: The remaining objections addressed critical issues related to traffic management within the town centre. These included concerns about the proposed implementation of a one-way system, which may have implications for traffic flow and accessibility. Additionally, parking availability and the need for improvements to pedestrian walkways were highlighted as areas requiring further consideration and enhancement.
The Draft Special Area Plan for Pusat Bandar Kajang covers an area of approximately 53.71 hectares within the town centre. The plan proposes a total of 44 distinct projects designed to enhance various facets of the urban environment. These projects are strategically planned across several key domains:
The federal initiative underpinning this development plan, costing an estimated RM650,000, is integrated within the framework of the 12th Malaysia Plan. MPKj president Nazli Md Taib previously stated that all feedback received during the public consultation period would be meticulously compiled into a comprehensive report. Furthermore, individuals and groups who submitted their views will be invited to participate in subsequent stages of the process, including an investigation and public hearing committee meeting. This ensures a transparent and inclusive approach to finalising the plan.
Kajang town centre, as one of Selangor’s oldest commercial districts, holds significant historical and cultural value. It is renowned for its charming traditional shophouses, the historically significant Jalan Mendaling, and of course, its world-famous satay, making the careful consideration of its future development paramount.
