Gaming Platform Faces ‘Horrendous’ Scrutiny

Concerns Raised Over Child Safety on Roblox Platform

Australia’s Communications Minister, Anika Wells, has expressed grave concerns regarding the presence of explicit and self-harm content on the popular online gaming platform Roblox. Despite previous assurances reportedly given to the eSafety Commissioner, Minister Wells has written to Roblox requesting an urgent meeting to address these ongoing issues.

“I am alarmed by reports of children being exposed to graphic and gratuitous user-generated content on the platform, including sexually explicit and suicidal material,” Minister Wells stated in her letter. The Minister highlighted that even more disturbing are persistent reports and anxieties surrounding children being targeted and groomed by predatory individuals who exploit their curiosity and innocence.

Minister Wells emphasised the seriousness of the situation, declaring it “untenable” and a matter of “deep concern.” She is seeking an immediate discussion with Roblox to understand the specific actions being implemented to enhance safety measures and user experiences on their platform.

A spokesperson for Roblox acknowledged that while no safety system is entirely infallible, the company has recently introduced updates designed to restrict user interactions to those of a similar age. “We look forward to the opportunity to inform the minister of the steps we take to help keep our community safe,” the spokesperson commented.

The company asserts that Roblox employs “robust safety policies and processes” that reportedly surpass those of many other platforms. These include advanced safeguards for monitoring harmful content and communications. Specific features mentioned by the spokesperson include filters designed to prevent the sharing of personal information, chat functionalities that disallow user-to-user image or video sharing, and a recent global rollout of age verification measures. These age checks aim to ensure that children and teenagers are, by default, limited to communicating with users of comparable age.

Furthermore, Roblox indicated its close collaboration with Australian law enforcement agencies to support their investigations. The spokesperson reiterated, “While no system is perfect, our commitment to safety never ends, and we continue to strengthen protections to help keep users safe.”

Roblox is a vast digital ecosystem enabling users to create games and virtual worlds. The platform boasts an impressive user base, with reports indicating 151.5 million daily active users and approximately 3.5 million developers contributing content. Third-party analyses suggest that around 44 per cent of these daily users are over the age of 17. The Asia-Pacific region constitutes the platform’s largest market, accounting for 29.5 per cent of its user base.

Minister Wells described the accounts of predators grooming children on Roblox as “horrendous.” She reiterated, “The reports we’ve been hearing about children being exposed to graphic content on Roblox, and predators actively using the platform to groom young people, are horrendous. Something must be done now.”

The Minister linked these reported harms to the need for a digital duty of care framework. “These sorts of harms show why we need a digital duty of care, which will place the onus on digital platforms to proactively keep their users, particularly children, safe,” she stated.

It is noted that Roblox is currently exempt from the social media ban applicable to under-16s, as it is classified as a gaming platform rather than an explicit social media service. However, in November, the eSafety Commissioner had indicated that Roblox was “on the line” regarding this ban, and the list of prohibited platforms could potentially expand.

Roblox does implement facial age verification for all users wishing to engage in chat features. The company further states that all messages shared on the platform are unencrypted, allowing for comprehensive scanning and monitoring of conversations.
