Lamborghini has unveiled its highly anticipated successor to the Huracan, and it arrives with a seismic shift in its powertrain philosophy. Dubbed the Temerario, this new V8-powered, plug-in hybrid supercar marks a significant departure from the V10 lineage that defined its predecessors. While the engine note may be different, the core Lamborghini spirit of exhilarating performance and audacious design remains firmly intact.
The journey for Lamborghini’s ‘baby’ supercar began over two decades ago with the Gallardo. Under the stewardship of Audi, the V10-powered Gallardo offered a welcome dose of usability in the supercar segment, a stark contrast to the more theatrical V12 machines like the Murcielago and Aventador. It was a resounding success, spawning numerous special editions and bringing all-wheel-drive to a broader, albeit still exclusive, audience. This high-revving V10 became a hallmark, a characteristic that carried through to its immensely popular successor, the Huracan. Even the Audi R8, sharing its platform, initially adopted a V8 to maintain differentiation. The Huracan, in its various, increasingly extreme forms like the Performante, STO, and the unconventional Sterrato, solidified this V10 identity.
Now, with the advent of the Temerario, the V10 era for Lamborghini’s second-tier supercar has drawn to a close. This isn’t just a change of engine; it’s a fundamental reimagining. The Temerario is propelled by a twin-turbo V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain, featuring a staggering 10,000rpm redline. While high revs aren’t typically associated with twin-turbo V8s, Lamborghini suggests that the unique design of this new engine might just defy expectations.
At the heart of the Temerario lies a brand-new, flat-plane crank V8, designed entirely in-house by Lamborghini. This powerhouse is mid-mounted within a new aluminium monocoque chassis and is paired with a novel eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.
The transmission’s relocation behind the engine has created space for the battery. Furthermore, the system incorporates two electric motors on the front wheels for torque vectoring, and a third electric motor positioned between the engine and gearbox. This sophisticated setup ensures that even with the significant weight of the hybrid components, the Temerario aims to deliver a balanced and engaging driving experience.
The twin-turbo V8, without the electric assistance, would likely contend with considerable turbo lag. However, the electric motors provide immediate power, spooling up the turbos and smoothing out any potential hesitation. This synergy ensures a responsive and potent acceleration profile.
The new chassis represents a significant engineering feat, with fewer components and a substantial reduction in welding. This results in a lighter, yet more rigid, framework – a 24 per cent increase in torsional rigidity. While the Temerario is approximately 250kg heavier than the Huracan, Lamborghini claims this weight has been strategically distributed to minimise its impact on the driving dynamics.
Igniting the Temerario via the signature ‘Big Red Button’ is a more subdued affair than in its V10 predecessors. The car defaults to ‘Citta’ (City) mode, allowing for silent electric propulsion. As the throttle is applied, the V8 roars to life, its direct-injection rumble and turbocharger whistle a distinct, albeit different, soundtrack.
The drive modes offer a spectrum of experiences:
Compared to the often-intimidating ingress and egress of the Huracan, the Temerario offers a far more accessible experience, akin to its Audi R8 cousin. The controls are more intuitive, the media display clearer, and the cabin boasts increased head and legroom. The ride quality is also markedly improved, with adaptive damping smoothing out imperfections on even challenging Italian roads. The fear of scraping the front end on bumps is largely a thing of the past.
Even in challenging situations, such as navigating narrow, gravel-strewn roads, the Temerario proved remarkably composed. Its expanded versatility was evident as it handled the precarious situation with grace. While rearward visibility remains somewhat restricted, larger mirrors and an effective rear camera mitigate this. The inclusion of advanced safety features, once seemingly incompatible with a supercar, further enhances its practicality.
The steering-wheel-mounted indicators, while a departure from the Huracan’s setup, become familiar with use. Engaging ‘Sport’ mode transforms the car’s character, making spirited driving and navigating roundabouts a joyous affair. The initial acceleration out of a roundabout is met with a rapid gear change and a controlled, playful tail wag – a testament to the car’s lively nature and sophisticated electronic aids.
Those expecting the operatic V10 symphony of the past might need to adjust their expectations. Modern emissions regulations and the inherent nature of turbocharging mean the Temerario’s V8 exhaust note, while still impressive, is more mechanical and less overtly dramatic than its V10 predecessor. The flat-plane crank design does, however, produce a compelling sound, particularly when unleashed within enclosed spaces like tunnels. While it may not deliver the same goosebumps as the V10, it certainly announces its presence.
The science behind the V10’s captivating sound is often attributed to its harmonic frequencies, reminiscent of musical instruments. The Temerario’s V8 offers a different, yet equally engaging, sonic palette.
As the road opens up, allowing for more spirited driving, the Temerario reveals its true capabilities. It’s a car that inspires confidence, its stable ride and precise steering allowing for rapid progress. The nose darts eagerly into corners, and the weighting of the steering feels perfectly judged for road use.
The front electric motors play a crucial role, particularly during aggressive cornering. Their torque-vectoring capabilities provide immense grip, enabling astonishing corner entry and exit speeds. It effectively functions as an advanced front differential, sharpening turn-in and maximising traction for seamless directional changes.
The colossal carbon-ceramic brakes provide immense stopping power. While historically, such brakes could be challenging for everyday road use, the Temerario’s brake-by-wire system ensures seamless and predictable performance, even when cold.
A primary concern for any new supercar is whether the pursuit of immense power compromises drivability and character. The V10’s linear power delivery and soaring vocals were a tough act to follow. However, the Temerario’s hybrid powertrain proves to be remarkably effective. The transition from efficient ‘Citta’ mode to the performance-oriented ‘Sport’ and ‘Corsa’ modes is seamless. The colossal combined power figures are delivered in a manner that enhances, rather than overwhelms, the driving experience.
Effortless shove is available across the rev range, and the eight-speed gearbox, whether left to its own devices or operated manually, delivers satisfying shifts accompanied by a pleasing cabin sound. The surge of power feels immediate and potent, dispelling any concerns about a lack of personality. The Temerario feels like a true successor to the Huracan, offering a level of flexibility and outright speed that its predecessor could only dream of.
The ability to switch to EV mode in traffic is a welcome addition, smoothing out stop-start driving and reducing the car’s overall impact. This practical feature, combined with the reduced CO2 emissions, makes the Temerario a more responsible choice without sacrificing its supercar credentials.
Do I miss the V10? Absolutely. Its unique character was undeniable. However, is the Temerario a better car? Unquestionably, yes. It’s a more user-friendly and versatile supercar that retains the edge, power, and speed that Lamborghini is renowned for. It’s safer, greener, and packed with technology that enhances the driving experience across all conditions, from city streets to mountain passes.
