US Forces Pursue Oil Tanker Near Australian Shores

US Navy Intercepts Sanctioned Oil Tanker in Indian Ocean After Extensive Pursuit

The United States Navy has successfully intercepted and boarded a sanctioned oil tanker, the Aquila II, in the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean. This dramatic interception marks the culmination of an extraordinary 15,000-kilometre chase, originating from the Caribbean Sea. The vessel, believed to be part of a clandestine network of tankers transporting oil under international sanctions, had been evading authorities since early January, following the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

According to the US Department of Defense, American forces “tracked and hunted” the Aquila II across multiple oceans before boarding it within the Indo-Pacific command’s operational jurisdiction. While the Pentagon has not definitively confirmed the tanker’s seizure, its actions underscore a firm stance against the circumvention of sanctions.

A Pentagon spokesperson articulated the mission’s rationale: “The Aquila II was operating in defiance of President [Donald] Trump’s established quarantine of sanctioned vessels in the Caribbean. It ran, and we followed.” The statement further emphasised the unparalleled global reach of the US military, asserting, “No other nation on planet Earth has the capability to enforce its will through any domain. By land, air, or sea, our Armed Forces will find you and deliver justice. You will run out of fuel long before you will outrun us.” The Department of War’s objective, as stated, is to “deny illicit actors and their proxies the ability to defy American power in the global maritime domain.”

While specific details regarding the tanker’s precise location and the full itinerary of its journey remain confidential, Bloomberg News, citing ship-tracking data, reported the Aquila II’s last known position was in the Indian Ocean, with its trajectory pointing towards the Sunda Strait. This strait, situated between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra, lies to the southwest of Australia’s Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

Later, War Secretary Pete Hegseth addressed an audience of defence contractor employees, confirming that the vessel had been “seized” with the explicit aim of ensuring the oil was “sold properly.” This incident represents the latest in a series of operations by the US to disrupt the flow of sanctioned oil and assert control over Venezuela’s significant oil reserves, the largest proven reserves globally. The Aquila II incident is notable for being the furthest known commandeering of a tanker from Venezuelan waters.

The Aquila II, a Panamanian-flagged tanker, is subject to US sanctions due to its involvement in the illicit transport of Russian oil. Ship-tracking information indicates that the vessel, owned by a company with a Hong Kong address, has frequently operated with its radio transponder deactivated for much of the past year. This practice, commonly known as “running dark,” is a hallmark of smuggling operations aimed at concealing a vessel’s movements. The tanker was initially sanctioned by the US in January 2025, towards the end of the Biden administration, with subsequent sanctions imposed by the United Kingdom and the European Union later that year, according to data from TankerTrackers.com.

Broader Geopolitical Context and EU Sanctions

The interception of the Aquila II occurred during Secretary Hegseth’s tour of defence companies in Maine and Rhode Island. His visit included a tour of General Dynamics Electric Boat, a key contractor for the US Navy, which is involved in building Virginia-class submarines – vessels slated for acquisition by Australia under the AUKUS security pact. During his visit, Secretary Hegseth also made public remarks criticising diversity initiatives and transgender individuals within the military, stating, “The dumbest thing I’ve heard generals say is that ‘our diversity is our strength’. It’s the single dumbest phrase in military history.” He further elaborated on his agenda, saying, “We’re getting rid of all the distractions – the DEI, the climate change. No more dudes in dresses,” comments that were met with applause from some attendees.

This action by the US follows other recent interdictions of vessels involved in sanctioned oil transport. In the preceding month, US forces boarded a Russian-flagged tanker off the coast of Iceland as it attempted to return from Venezuela. French commandos also conducted a similar operation against a “shadow fleet” vessel off the coast of France last year.

In parallel, the European Union is considering an expansion of its sanctions regime against Russia. A proposal, reported by Reuters and citing a document, suggests extending sanctions to include ports in Georgia and Indonesia that handle Russian oil. This would mark the first instance of the EU targeting ports in third-party countries. The proposed measures would add Kulevi in Georgia and Karimun in Indonesia to the sanctions list, prohibiting EU companies and individuals from engaging in transactions with these ports. These potential new sanctions are part of the EU’s broader 20th sanctions package in response to Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. The adoption of EU sanctions into law requires unanimous agreement among member states.

The Aquila II, a Panamanian-flagged oil tanker, was intercepted in the Indian Ocean.

The US Navy’s pursuit of the Aquila II covered an extensive distance of approximately 15,000 kilometres.

The Sunda Strait, a key maritime passage, was reportedly the intended destination of the Aquila II.
