Glasner: Palace Fans Must Stay Humble

Glasner’s Scathing Critique of Crystal Palace Fans Amidst Relegation Fears

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has launched a remarkable and fiery tirade against the club’s own supporters, following chants calling for his dismissal during their recent Conference League draw at Zrinjski Mostar in Bosnia. The Austrian coach, currently facing immense pressure as Palace find themselves embroiled in a genuine relegation battle, did not hold back in his assessment of the fanbase’s conduct.

The Eagles’ Premier League form has been a cause for significant concern, with only one victory in their last eleven league outings. Compounding their woes, they suffered a humiliating FA Cup exit at the hands of sixth-tier outfit Macclesfield, a result that sent shockwaves through English football. This downturn has placed Glasner squarely under the microscope, with club hierarchy reportedly deliberating his future as the team’s predicament appears to worsen.

Glasner, who famously led Crystal Palace to FA Cup glory last season, a historic achievement for the club, has already confirmed his departure at the season’s end. However, this did not temper his bluntness when addressing the vocal criticism directed at him during the 1-1 draw in Mostar.

A Call for Humility from the Stands

“I didn’t expect the fans to carry me through London after winning the trophy (FA Cup) so they can say and sing whatever they want,” Glasner stated, his tone clearly expressing disbelief and disappointment. He continued with a strong emphasis on the importance of maintaining perspective:

‘I always say the most important thing is to stay humble and I think it’s the same for the fans,’ Glasner asserted. ‘Never forget where you have come from. The few who are so critical in this situation are not humble any more and have forgotten where they have come from. Usually in life you get punished for this.’

The manager believes that expectations at Selhurst Park have become distorted: ‘The expectations have completely changed and we cannot deal with it as a team and our fans are dealing even worse.’

Players Also in Glasner’s Crosshairs

The criticism was not solely directed at the terraces. Glasner also cast a critical eye over his squad’s performance, lamenting a perceived lack of focus and commitment. He suggested that a significant number of players are preoccupied with their future, rather than their immediate responsibilities on the pitch.

‘I feel many players think they have to move on and some are looking at where they will play next year rather than where they are playing right now,’ he added, highlighting a potential disconnect between individual aspirations and team objectives.

Despite the club reportedly reviewing his position, Glasner is expected to be in charge when Crystal Palace host Wolves on Saturday. His tenure at Selhurst Park has not been without its successes. Beyond securing the club’s first major trophy, he also oversaw their longest-ever unbeaten run, a remarkable 19-game streak spanning from April to October.

Reflecting on his time at the club, Glasner maintained his commitment: ‘I’ve always given my best. Palace have had the best time in their history and I played a small part in this. It would have been easy for me to have stepped back earlier – there have been many opportunities. But I didn’t because I felt responsible for the players.’
