Abbott Slams Starmer Applause as PM Vows to Stay

Abbott Calls Labour Leader’s Applause “Staged” Amidst Growing Pressure

Veteran MP Diane Abbott has publicly criticised the standing ovation given to Labour leader Keir Starmer following his commitment to remain in his position, labelling the display as “staged.” The incident occurred on Monday evening as Starmer addressed the parliamentary Labour Party, a gathering that took place under a cloud of intense scrutiny and calls for his resignation. This pressure has been amplified by ongoing controversies, including associations with Lord Peter Mandelson and the recent unsealing of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case.

Following Starmer’s address, a lengthy round of applause reportedly erupted within the committee room. However, Abbott, who herself faced suspension from the Labour Party last year, expressed her skepticism about the authenticity of the support. Speaking to Channel 4 News, she stated, “I think the round of applause in the committee room just now was staged.”

Abbott further cast doubt on Starmer’s political future, suggesting that his tenure as leader may be nearing its end. “I can’t see him lasting beyond May’s election,” she commented, implying that the upcoming local elections in May could prove to be a significant turning point.

Despite Abbott’s reservations, a number of prominent Labour figures have publicly backed Sir Keir. This group includes key cabinet ministers such as Angela Rayner, David Lammy, Rachel Reeves, and Wes Streeting, all of whom have reportedly expressed their solidarity with the leader. This internal show of support, however, has not entirely quelled the internal dissent or the external pressures the Labour Party is currently facing.

The political landscape surrounding Starmer has become increasingly complex. The fallout from the Epstein files, which have begun to reveal previously undisclosed details and associations, has added a new layer of concern for the party. Simultaneously, the looming May elections present a critical electoral test that could significantly shape the future leadership of the Labour Party, regardless of the current displays of internal unity.
