The National Rugby League (NRL) season launch has been utterly dominated by one seismic announcement: the impending arrival of superstar prop Payne Haas at the South Sydney Rabbitohs from 2027. While the ink is barely dry on the mega-deal, the buzz surrounding the signing is deafening, especially with Brisbane preparing to defend their premiership just a month from now. The Broncos have a narrow window, until next week, to sway Haas to reconsider, following the Rabbitohs’ official lodging of the three-year contract with the NRL, triggering a mandatory 10-day cooling-off period.
Haas himself was en route to London with his bewildered Brisbane teammates for the World Club Challenge, a trip marred by the shockwaves of his decision. The news also blindsided the Rabbitohs’ current playing group, who were unaware of coach Wayne Bennett’s ambitious pursuit of the game’s premier forward. This is a significant homecoming of sorts, given Bennett, a former Broncos mentor, handed the then 26-year-old his maiden NRL contract a decade ago.
The acquisition of Haas is undeniably one of the most impactful signings in the Rabbitohs’ modern history. To contextualise its potential, one need only look back to Greg Inglis’s defection from Melbourne to Redfern in 2011. This move is widely regarded as the catalyst that transformed the Rabbitohs from perennial underachievers into a drought-breaking premiership-winning force. The earlier arrivals of Sam Burgess in 2010 and Michael Crocker from the Storm the preceding year also played crucial roles in rebuilding the club’s appeal and success.
However, the sheer class and current standing of Payne Haas suggest he possesses the potential to eclipse even these legendary figures. Widely acknowledged as the best forward in the competition with a substantial portion of his career still ahead of him, Haas represents a generational talent.
Rabbitohs captain Cameron Murray has issued a clear challenge to his teammates: the onus is on them to maximise the impact of Haas’s arrival. He insists that the transformative power of the signing rests squarely on the shoulders of the current playing group.
“I’ll leave the how big it is and how transformative it’ll be to the commentators on the sidelines,” Murray stated, deflecting immediate grand pronouncements. “For us, it’s about making the most of that type of signing. Not thinking that success is just going to come because we’ve got a signature on a contract.”
Murray’s message is one of proactive engagement and earned success. He emphasised the importance of embodying the club’s core tenets.
“It’s about earning the right and living the values that we stand for at the club and continuing some of the great legacies that have been here at the club,” he explained. “Like the Greg Inglis’s and the Sam Burgess’s and stuff like that … But that’s something to think about next year.”
The Rabbitohs have endured a challenging period, failing to make the finals since 2022. A late-season collapse in 2023, coupled with two seasons heavily impacted by injuries, has seen the club struggle to regain its footing. Despite these results, Murray believes the Rabbitohs have maintained their allure as a destination club, a sentiment further bolstered by the recent recruitment of David Fifita under Bennett’s guidance.
“I don’t think the results are reflective of the club that we are and the culture and the values that we stand for,” Murray asserted. He expressed confidence in the current direction, particularly with the return of Wayne Bennett at the helm.
“Obviously now we’ve got Wayne back, who’s sort of leading that fight back to where we think we belong and where we think we’re capable of finishing as a club,” he said. “I would like to think even before Payne signed, it was still a desirable club for people to come to. We’ve got a lot of draws to our club.”
The focus for the current Rabbitohs squad, as articulated by Murray, is to build on this foundation of desirability, cultivate a winning culture, and ensure that when Haas does arrive, he joins a team ready to capitalise on his immense talent and elevate the club back to its former glory. The challenge is laid down: it’s time for the current players to prove their worth and make the most of the opportunities presented.
