Michael Urie’s Initial Nerves and Unexpected On-Screen Chemistry in ‘Shrinking’
Fans of the hit comedy-drama ‘Shrinking’ can breathe a sigh of relief, as the show has officially been renewed for another season, promising more of the witty banter and heartfelt moments that have captured audiences. A significant part of the show’s charm lies in the dynamic between Jason Segel’s character, Jimmy, a therapist navigating his grief, and Michael Urie’s portrayal of Brian, Jimmy’s sharp and steadfast estate lawyer best friend. Brian serves as a crucial grounding force for Jimmy, offering honest advice and unwavering support, just as any true best friend would.
However, Michael Urie has revealed that stepping into the role of Jimmy’s closest confidante wasn’t without its anxieties. He admitted to feeling “nervous” about playing such an integral part in Segel’s character’s life, admitting he harboured doubts about their potential on-screen “compatibility” before filming even began.
“I knew I was going to be playing Jason’s best friend, and I didn’t know Jason,” Urie explained. “And I thought, there’s definitely going to be some kind of chemistry read.”

Despite his extensive experience in crafting compelling on-screen relationships, including his memorable dynamic with America Ferrera in ‘Ugly Betty’, the absence of a formal chemistry read with Jason Segel prior to securing his role in ‘Shrinking’ left Urie feeling somewhat apprehensive.
“I was really nervous,” he confessed. “I was like, what’s it going to be like to suddenly have to one, two, three, be best friends?”
From Concern to Comradery: The Easiest Part of the Job
Urie’s initial concerns about forging an authentic best-friend bond with Segel quickly dissipated, transforming into what he describes as “probably the easiest part of the job.” The on-screen chemistry between the two actors not only met but exceeded expectations, becoming a cornerstone of the show’s narrative. This central relationship serves as a vital anchor, allowing the talented ensemble cast, which includes screen legends like Harrison Ford, along with Christa Miller and Jessica Williams, to build upon their characters’ interactions.
“It was actually probably the easiest part of the job because Jason Segel is the menschiest mensch of all mensches,” Urie stated, a phrase that, while perhaps not a standard idiom, clearly conveys a deep sense of admiration and affection.
While the exact meaning of “menschiest mensch” might be open to interpretation, Urie’s sentiment is undeniably clear. He elaborated on his co-star’s character, describing Segel as:
- “He is such a sweet man.
- He is so soulful.
- He’s the kind of guy you talk to for 10 minutes and you’re crying because he’s gotten to the heart of you are.”

This profound connection and ease between Urie and Segel translated seamlessly into their performances, allowing them to effortlessly portray a believable and deeply resonant friendship. Their natural rapport is a testament to Segel’s warm and empathetic nature, which Urie found instrumental in establishing their on-screen bond. The success of this central friendship is a key element that contributes to the overall appeal of ‘Shrinking’, making the upcoming season all the more anticipated by its dedicated fanbase. The show masterfully balances humour with emotional depth, and the authentic friendship between Jimmy and Brian is a prime example of this successful formula.
